Topic Dog Boards / Health / Slushy poo/ anal glands

Hello again
I posted a problem about a week ago about my 1 year old male Westie having on-going problems with soft/slushy poo.
He was at the vet almost 2 weeks ago and had his anal glands emptied for the 3rd time(they were full). Took Vets advice about trying lower fat food (he's now on Pal complete) and loves it. Also Vet suggested i split his meal into 2 smaller meals to give his stomach time to digest contents. 2 weeks on and we're still having the same problem. First stool passed is usually formed and soft, what follows after is usually mushy with him bearing down alot passing drops of mucus like poo. He has also been dragging his bottom again. He was wormed with Drontal on the 24th March. Over the last 2 days i took someones advice and have fed him with mashed potato with alittle chicken. Early days i know but his poo was still soft this morning and dragging his bottom.
Do you think it could still be worms ?. Vet says Drontal would be enough to clear him.
Also do any of you attend to your dogs anal glands. A horrible question i know but IS it a thing i could tackle myself, (with a boiler suit, face mask and marigolds)
More helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S He is still as lively as ever.

Hi
The mucus type stuff is likely to be the lining of the stomach, I'd ask for some antibiotics..haven't read your other post so you may have done this already, also there is a parasite called guardia which can cause these symptoms and it's the panacur wormer which get rid of it. Good luch with the boiler suit ect :D

Hi there,

Murph's only 17 weeksold but I've not yet had a problem with his anal glands...hope never too:0
He's on a natural.barf diet and his poos are always very firm. This is supposed to 'naturally' express the glands. Not sure what the answer is for complete fed dogs although I've read that Burn's is a very good complete as is Oscars.

Slushy poos can be a sign of feeding too much food - had this with my pup when she was very small and feeding her on complete - made the mistake of feeding her the quantities on the packet :) . Older dog has been on raw for long while and has never had anal gland trouble - thank goodness :)

Hi

No, I don't think its worms. Your dog needs his diet bulking out (providing he has the all clear healthwise from the vet) as his current diet is not making the glands work effectively.

Try him on Burns/Oscar or Nutro - all are good quality foods which will "exercise the affected parts" :)
