Can I just ask what is the best way to introduce a pup to horses ?
Where we walk him in the woods there is also a horse pathway and I would like to know of any good advice on how to train pup when meeting a horse .
He has met them while on lead and seems fascinated bythem . He stopped , wasnt frightened ,but obviously I want him to react positively . I dont want him to scare the horse .
The area they meet is where dogs are off lead and a horse may aproach and I wouldnt want either to scare the other - does anyone have any tips ?
I dont know anyone with a horse that I could introduce pup to

If you don't actually know anyone with a horse then I suggest you try either your local riding school or hunt kennels and explain you have a puppy & for everyones safety (thats bound to have the right effect! :) ) you want to introduce it to horses. I am quite sure that both would be delighted to let you go along. Make sure its a horse that is steady to dogs (obviously the hunt horses are best at this) and just walk your pup around it on a lead. Once the pup is calm about it & ignoring the horse , go up & pat horse etc, then ask someon to quietly lead the horse in a walk, and just walk alongside for a bit.(not behind as pup may think its a chase game) Then do the same trotting. Most pups get a bit over excited once the speed increases & obviously your pups recall/sit/stay or 'ware etc training will have to be good before you can risk letting it off the lead with ridden horses. be very cautious about letting off the lead with loose horses (ie not under saddle) as even the most dog loving horse can become very different when turned out.....I had one that was fantastic with hounds under saddle, they could climb all over him, but a loose dog in his field would be chased & killed.

I was going to suggest the same as Sam! :)

There must be a riding stable somewhere near you, if not a hunt kennels. Failing that, can you get chatting to on of the people riding the horses that you do meet? The final aimis to get the pup ignoring horses (and other livestock) so if you can walk alongside ignoring it and getting pups attention to you, it will help tremendously.

Mine are bored with walked horses, but cantering horses are terribly exciting - but as a breed they were designed to follow horses so it's understandable that they will follow their breeding. They were fascinated (and highly amused!!) when they realised there was a person up there!!!
