Hi all,

As you can see I am fairly new here so first I'd like to say hello to everyone. I have been having problems with logging in, it logs me in and immediatley logs me back out, so I am hoping if I post a message here someone will answer it.

I am after some advise really on OCD. My seven month old dog has had a limp for a week and so I took him to the vets to get it checked out. he was put on a course of tablets and I was told to give him complete rest. If after seven days after I had finished the tablets his limp was still there I had to call the vet.

The limp eased during the seven days but the minute the tablets were stopped it came back. I called my vet who suggested an x ray. So my poor boy had to go into the vets all day and be left on his own. I dropped him off at 8:30 and couldn't pick him up until 5pm.
The x ray results showed his right shoulder perfectly but his left shoulder had a piece missing off the top of the ball joint. The vet described this as OCD. Now I am on two weeks worth of tablets and very mild exercise but his limp doesn't seem to of gone away this time. The vet has explianed OCD to me but I couldn't take it all in. I thought it was just growing pains

The vet has said that see how he goes for two weeks and if he is no better then maybe we should seriously think about going to bristol for keyhole surgey to remove the bit of bone he thinks his trapped in there. Oh my poor baby but if that's what it takes to make him better then he will have it. I am just concerned about his age and the severity of an operation.
Will he be back to normal and can they guarantee that or do we go through it all for a chance? I have read up no the internet about it but I feel that most of what I have read is out of date.

Have any of you got nay more advise you could give me or have you got first hand experience of dealing with OCD.

The vet has also said that he has got an increased risk of gettin arthiritis (spelt wrong) in his earlier rather than later life.
My poor baby.

Cheers all.

Hi Kelly.

OCD or Osteochrondrosis Dessicans is a nasty condition. Is your dog a Labrador? it does affect them badly. I know of several dogs that have been operated on for this condition. The pieces that fall off are called "joint mice" they float around the joint causing the pain and swelling your dog is experiencing. One dog I know had it severely in her stifle, she was operated on by our vet, he flushed out the "mice" from the joint, she was 18mths then and is 12yrs now, she has led a relatively active life, but exercise has always had to be restricted, although I believe many dogs are 100% afterwards. I have known two other cases, both in the shoulder/elbow area, both referred to specialists and both are still very lame and in some discomfort. The best thing at the moment is rest, I would be reluctant to have major surgery on a pup so young, as recovery is slow and they should be kept VERY quiet, not easy!! Keep us informed, and good luck.
Dawn.
