My three Staffs have picked up the dreaded cough after their daily walks last week, Wednesday, first one started retching, thought it was something stuck in her throat at first, booked her into the vets, but just before we went on Thursday the second one began with the same horrible sounds, vet diagnosed it as Kennel cough. Sunday the eldest bitch went down with it... question is, now that the retching/coughing and nasal discharges seem to have disappeared thanks to anti biotics and Benylin cough mixture, what sort of quarantine do I need to impose on my three before we can go out on our daily walks again?

I think you are pretty safe once the coughing has completely stopped.

OK now I'm confused. It might have cleared up quickly because we caught it early, they seem to be totally clear of any symptoms?
Is it that deceptive/contagious that they would need to spend another 6/8 weeks inside?

Infected dogs become carriers and can remain infectious for up to three months :(

Their energy levels are too much to handle now... they have just moved onto plan 2, which is a shift rotation of pester him time till he caves in and takes us out!!!

can I ask if your 3 had the kennel cough spray ?

Only asking as it has been mentioned to me that dogs can still catch KC even if they have had the spray ?

Twice I've had dogs come down with kennel cough within days of getting the spray. Afterwards, twice vets told me it was "impossible" to get kennel cough from the vaccine to prevent it. It's not an answer to your question, but I betcha the answer is "yes".

I think you need to remember that there are many variants of the kennel cough virus and the treatments only cover one/some of the virus strains and not others.

It's a bit like flu, I think. The vaccine protects you against the most common variants of the virus, but not against all the others.

Can an owner unknowingly pass it on too - or is through doggy contact only .
Does a dog have to be in direct contact with a dog who has KC or can it be caught say from smelling urine etc ?

It's airborne...apparently recovery is usually spontaneous (like a person with a cold) and complete within 2-3 weeks. Bordetella virus can remain in the airways long after clinical recovery - up to 12 weeks, and immunity is relatively short-lived.

Apparently any infectious cough is called Kennel Cough.
