Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppys Constant Barking At Night!!HELP!!
- By Dragonx6x [us] Date 17.04.03 00:12 UTC
I have a 10 week year old puppy that we just picked up! She was just seperated from her mom and is learning many new things because she has not yet been outside (live in the city). Well any way.... She sleeps in a closet with a blanket, At night she would sleep for an hour or two then in the middle of the night Whine and cry for about 15 minutes go bac to sleep and do it again later on in the night! s Its really draining my family of sleep. We walk her in the morning(6), afternoon(3), and at night(8). I read that it maybe anxiety or something is there away to stop this?

-Also we recently left her in the closet by herself while the family was out, and i believe she was trying to leave because she ripped the carpet with her paws. and pulled down somethings off the wall... can any one help me on this?

You say that she is in a closet ?? is this like a cupboard under the stairs or something..is there good air flow, light, anything to see except walls and a door ?
I'm not suggesting that this is what it's like but could you give a few more details please ..thanks.

Thanx for replying tracey

Yea its like a storage closet so its kinda large! As soon as you walkin theres a window in the back... Yea the weather has been nice lately so i have opened theres good airflow in there, not really alot to see except in there but a table towards the back so she cant see the window. At night we would either keep the light on or use a nightlite. And close the closet door. I thinks she really hates the confinment. thats basically it! we leave her with some water and sometimes food!

Soon she will be sleeping outside when we get the dog house! Do u think its ok for her, at least 12 weeks to sleep outside, she is 10 wks now?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 17.04.03 06:49 UTC
Think she needs more company and less walking. At ten weeks a pup needs food, sleep, play and company. Lots of new experiances and attention from lots of people. She is unhappy, lonely and confused. If she spend her day exploring and being played with she is far more likley to sleep at night.

My lab was outside from when I had her, but she had another dog as company and she sleeps through (except cannot really make it passed 6am)

My akita when she was a young pup was outside from about 11 weeks and took about 5 weeks to stop waking me up early - you do get used to it. I would suggest getting the dog run built asap so that you can start getting her used to it by putting her in it for very short periods of time when you are home and then let her out. Vary the times so she cannot get used to how long she will be left

If she is barking and whining at night, all that she is basically doing is calling for her 'pack' (that is, you and your family). The best thing you can do is make sure she is comfortable, and ignore it. I know it's hard, especially in the middle of the night, but the sooner she realises that nobody is going to come running, the sooner she will be quiet! When you do go to see her or let her out, make sure it's at a time when she is not barking/whining - it has to be when she is quiet. Otherwise she is learning that she can call you to come to her.
The only other thing I can suggest is that you go to the chemist and invest in some earplugs - my husband did when we got our first puppy, who was quite noisy for the first four nights we had him.

May be I read it wrong, but it would appear that this pup is in a cupboard most of the time.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.04.03 16:01 UTC
That's how it seems to me, too. :(

Perhaps she'll stop whining if you interact more with her during the day? When did she complete her course of injections?

Edited to add: If I've misunderstood, and the puppy isn't kept as isolated as she sounds, then I apologise.
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 17.04.03 16:29 UTC
Have you thought that maybe the pup needs to go to the toilet? Perhaps her whining is cause she wants to go out. As we know pups can not hold their bladders long. Perhaps you should try letting her out then streight back to bed!

worth a try, also maybe a crate or somthing would be better so she does not feel so isolated?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.04.03 16:59 UTC
I'm sure I'm being very dense here, but you say she hasn't been outside, yet she is walked 3 times a day. If she's walked at 6am, 3pm and 8pm, what is the rest of her daytime routine? I'm sure she's not alone from after her 6am walk till her 3pm walk, surely?
- By Dragonx6x [us] Date 17.04.03 21:41 UTC
Sorry for all the confusion... *^ I just got her and she just began going outside... She's been goin outside for about 4 days so far.

*She is in a cupboard type room. :( yea after her walk in the morning we leave from 8:30am until about 3 from then she is with us, then walked again at around 8 then we put her in the room at 10.
*She would sleep for about an hour or two then wake up and start the problems. we would open the door tell her "down" and she would listen but start again later on in the night.
*The Crate sounds like a good idea but soon she will be outside in her dog house. When the weather gets better. No needto apologize, What im gonna do also is instead of closing the door get a one of those grids to block the door! I really appreciate every ones help! Anything else i need to clear up?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.04.03 10:16 UTC
If it is a room then it is the same as crating her. It could be that she doesn't want to dirty in there and is asking to go out to be clean.

I would come doen to her and take her outside, and use a word for eliminating. do not play with or pet her. If she realises that you will only take her outside briefly to do her business, but will not play or otherwise do anytihing interesting she will setle down and sleep.

If this closet leads into the kitchen, you could try leaving the door open after you come in from toilet duties, all the time ignoring her, put the kettle on make a cup of tea, but toatally avoid eye contact, and see if she will go in and settle to sleep o her own. If she does, just shut the door, and go up to bed.

She is left for quite a long time for a small puppy from 8.30 to 3pm. Who comes in to feed her? As at that age she wpu;ld be on four meals a day? What is the routine then. I assume she is not in the closet room then, but has more space to play?

Does she have any toys to chew in her bed? Also if it is anxiety about being away from you, give her an old t shirt you have worn, that has your scent on, this often will comfort a dog.
- By Dragonx6x [us] Date 18.04.03 12:20 UTC
No she isnt in the closet all that time... only one day she was there for that long in the afternoon.

She is fed 3-4 times day... usually when we give her food in the morning she doesnt finish it all. In the after noon we refresh her bowl. around 6:00 she gets her snack and later on befor we walk her she gets dinner. Its basically someting like that.

Fromm reading this post it seems she made need some more attension. she enjoys sleeping our rooms which makes it easier for us because she doesnt whine cry poo or piss at night just gets up occasionally to change positions!

She is a black nose pitbull
- By Wendy J [gb] Date 18.04.03 13:13 UTC
And are you planning on keeping her outside all the time? I only ask because my feelings about only dogs are that they need a lot of socialisation to be 'good citizens'. If she is kept outside alone most of the time (ie all day while you're at work and again all night) then she may not socialise well - and esp considering a breed like that already has a hard time getting past its reputation you may want to work really hard with her to make sure she's socialised.

Is there any way you would consider a dog bed in the bedroom so she can spend her nights in with you, but still be outside with the dog house during the day when you're at work? You said she does well in your bedroom - that's because she has you there and feels secure in her 'pack'. I think she'd be better overall if you were able to carry on like this. I would feel differently if there was another dog (or dogs) for her to be with outside, because then she'd still be socialising.

Whats a Black Nosed Pitbull, is it a breed or a Pitbull with a black nose?
- By HappyStaffy [gb] Date 18.04.03 19:55 UTC
Same thought...I know about the red nose dogs, SBT/ISBT/APBT's, but black nosed, I thought that was their breed standard  Mr Murphy?
- By Dragonx6x [us] Date 27.04.03 00:36 UTC
Yea some APBT are put in caterglories of color types!

Its doesnt mean the color of the dog is actually red black or blue... but it can sometimes determine the color pattern! A red nose can have more Tan, white, red, golden ... a black nose can have more black white brindle brown and the blue nose can be blue fawn, grey/steel, or blue!
Basically its something like that you can do a little research 2 find out more!
-Thats wat makes pitbulls so unique they can come in about every color genetically possible!

How are things now?

Hi DragonX

Ive been off the board for a while. While you are correct to state that the APBT comes in every colour variation possible. The red nose does not mean the dog has red in its coat. It means the dog has a red nose. The red nose is a specific type of APBT that originated from the Irish dogs. Although there is records of some of these dogs being used for fighting they were preferred for breeding and pets as the temp was much more laid back. The red nose dogs are known as The Old Family Red. This is the only APBT to be listed by the colour of its nose.
