I would like to ask if anyone can tell me what they collars people use on dobermanns are called and whats the purpose of them as they tend to sit further back on the dogs neck ,,but obviously have a reason ( I think its for the dog pulling on the lead and rather than his neck being pulled is it so that its his chest that bears the pulling ? ) and also whats the going price for one of those collars and is there a special lead they use with it,,he`s quite a big pup....thanks....akkie ...... please help me.....

Hi Alex

I am not quite sure what you mean about the collars that sit further back on the dogs necks. I use half-checks on my lot for various reasons

The fabric collars, to be tight enough not to go over their heads need to be very tight on their necks and I don't like this as their is the risk of the dog slipping its collar just when you need it the most

They don't (if fitted correctly) tighten enough to strangle the dog and just clicking the chain part when on the lead is attached is usually enough to remind the dog what position it should be in when on the lead if it strays a little

Christine, would you recommend that I start to use a half check collar on my pup he turned 12 weeks last Tuesday. I have a fabric collar but as you say it needs to be quite tight on him as he has managed to struggle out of it one day when he was scared of a barking dog. Do you leave this collar on when he is off lead or should another be placed on him? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi- not Christine but I use a fabric collar for Murphy as his ''house '' collar and a half check collar when we go out -that way he can't slip the half check and when hes in the house he doesn't have to have such a snug fit :)

Thanks Liz, Does not murphy get a ridge in his fur from wearing his house collar? I like those rolled leather collars but as Sydney is only 12 weeks will have to wait till he is bigger before I buy him one. At what age did you start using a half check collar on Murphy?

Hiya - No - no ridge as the house collar is flat and quite loose .I started with a half check collar when I started training classes with him which was at 16 weeks
