First message from me, so hello to you all.

I'm not very good at searching the internet, but I've just tried without success to find a website that supplies medication for animals.

So I'd be very grateful if anyone could direct me to a website (UK preferable) that sells medication direct to the public.

The two types of medication I'm looking for is:
Benazepril and Millophyline.

I have been obtaining these from my Vet who prescribed them, but I'm trying to cut back on costs as it's getting to be very expensive altogether.
Naturally, my pet is worth it but things are getting a little tight money wise, so any savings would be more than welcome.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Welcome to the forum Garyb :-) Have you asked your vet if the medicine can be bought over the counter with a prescription at a high street chemist? Vet's are reluctant to hand out prescriptions but they have to offer you one by law.

Well I had a cost problem too, but no more, I will tell you that yes, vets do by law have to offer you a prescription, and where as before they could charge you £10.00, from last friday they mustn't charge you! Give Hyperdrug a ring to see if they have what you require, 0700 0456777. Take a look at the web site www.hyperdrug.co.uk. You could ask at your local chemist if they intend to stock animal medicines now that the laws have changed. Good luck, let me know how you get on.

I did hear that veterinary drugs were going to be made available from pharmacies but I had not heard that prescriptions were going to be free. How can a vet be expected to give his services for free? Won't he just say take your dog elsewhere?

I think its just the charge for the prescription that is no longer allowed. Once they have charged you for treatment and prescribed medication, you can then ask for the prescription and take that elsewhere to be filled and they can't charge you for the prescription itself.

You may find that some vets will ask you to leave the practice. :(

Thats what I was thinking Jeangenie I can't see them having you turn up at the practice, have the vet look at your records and write a prescription for nothing. Vets are not paid by the NHS, doctors can and do charge for private prescriptions.

You would probably find that a vet would charge a consultation fee (plus any extras such as x-rays etc) to diagnose the problem and then let you have the prescription. If they are obliged to give a written prescription now, I can't see them asking people to leave their practice, as it could get them into trouble.

They always have been obliged to provide a written prescription if the client asked for one, but they used to be allowed to charge for it. This charge is all that has changed.

We are talking about repeat prescriptions Jean, and as I said in my previous post even repeats cost money to generate so how can anybody be asked to produce them for free.

I did actually ask a vet this once, re writing a prescription so medicine could be bought elsewhere. The reply was that either consultation charges would rise to cover this loss, or services at the practice would have to be cut back.

As you (and he!) said, they are Private Practice, not NHS. Until vets are paid for out of taxes, the clients have to pay.

Thanks everyone for the answers you gave.

Sadly, I’m afraid my pet (Smudge) has become very much worse since I posted my message. After a number of days of being very happy and winning through, yesterday he had a very bad day and the Vet said no more can be done for him and just to see if he pulls through this latest set back.

During the night, he was quite poorly, so in Smudge’s best interest, I’ve made the heart breaking decision that unless he pulls round within the next couple of hours, then I’ll take him back to the vets for his ‘final’ injection.

Thank you Smudge for all the love you’ve shown me over the years, I’ll always remember you with the same amount of love and affection.
It’s going to be heart wrenching the amount I’ll miss you

Thanks once again to everyone who took the time to answer my question.

So sorry to hear this, garyb. My thoughts are with you. :(

Really sorry that you have had to come to this decision Gary, but it's the most loving thing you can do for an old friend who is suffering. Remember the good times.
