knocking over her water bowl!
My 5 month old lab keeps playing with her water bowl and ends up emptying it - not a problem when I am there but she has done it quite a few times when I am out and ends up not having any water available
Any ideas?

Oh its not just mine then!!!!!
My lab Darcy is the same age and thinks its great fun.
I tried getting her one of the heavy ceramic ones but she just uses her paw and over it goes.
Is a nightmare because its on carpet!!!!

MB is the same and digs in the water bowl and dunks her head in fully !
Moose was the same and soon grew out of it !
Just had to make sure the water bowl is always filled up ! If she is not left for too long when you go out it should not be a problem but watch out with this hot weather !

Think it is a Lab thing !

The last time this subject came up , I seem to remember that John had an excellent solution ....but I can't remember what I was .... :D However , I do have memories of people saying you can buy a water bowl holder that fixes to the wall ..you can then take the bowl out and fill it , but the dog can't knock it over.
Or I suppose you can put a rock IN the bowl ?

The silly thing is she is scared of water and we have so far got her paddling upto her feet when we take her out ! Straneg girl !
Maybe the elevated bowl holders might be a good idea as well ?

she digs in the bowl dunks her head in it, splashes the water with her paws. It is a really heavy ceramic one as well. I even tried a bucket thinking that would be too heavy to knock over but that went!
Putting a rock in it will just cause her to do it even more as she is fascinated with stones of any kind!
Will do a search to see if I can find John's suggestion
Monty's heavy ceramic water bowl sits inside a round plastic washing up bowl. He is a very messy drinker and the washing up bowl catches all the spillages. It also helps when he has a digging session, or head dunking to catch the blade of grass, or whatever is floating in there. :D
I think the double bowl idea would also make it difficult to tip the bowl up. Perhaps, it's worth a try?

that sounds like a good idea.
although I dont know how long the plastic washing up bowl would last with her chewing!!!

Our pup digs in the water bowl when its getting low on water - i think it may be his waying of telling us its getting low.Perhaps a dog drinking bottle would be a good idea whilst you are out (thats if you have a crate or somewhere you can put it)Or a saucepan??????/ They can be quite heavy and chew resistant.
We have anti-slip metal bowls that kind of fold over themselves on the outside (like layers - the outside layer sloped). These really can't be tipped (or she'd have to try really hard).
I don't know how else to describe them, but they're very common and not too expensive.

Hi Wendy, I think you mean a bowl shaped something like this
. /\___/\
/...........\ (ignore the dots, it wouldn't let me do empty spaces)
If you get a big enough one they can dig in it and move it around but I have not had one tipped over yet
Christine
You are SO clever - that is EXACTLY what I was talking about. And yup - they can wade, dig, splash but I can't see how it could be tipped:)

Try filling the underneath with cement for extra safety :D
Daisy

That reminds me of ehen I showed Rabbits. Many of them liked tipping up their bowls. At one of the shows some bright spark had set lots of dishes in concrete!!!

Instead of a bowl try one of those gerbil water things that they have to lick!!! :D :D :D :D

Try going into Petsathome. They do a double bowl (one water, one food) which is all in one and is sort of covered in so that the dogs can't get their paws under it to tip it. Because it sits flush to the floor with plastic to seal it the floor stays pretty clean and it is impossible to tip.
This is what we used for Os when he was going through this stage!!!! Believe me it works!

all good ideas but mine picks her's up in her mouth and moves them around - I have a heavy ceramic one. Came home last night and the two that I put in the run (working on the basis that one may survive!) had been tidily put in her kennel side by side and up side down!
Managed to catch her at it this morning and told her off and she left it alone but do not want to do this too much as she may start thinking that she is not allowed to drink!
Think I will need to make some sort of bracket to keep it fixed down.
Tim, I didn't realise she was outside. In that case, can you try one of the metal bowl holders that you can attach to the side of a cage or run? That way it would be off the floor and she wouldn't be able to pick it up. Just a thought.

My 5 month old does the same thing, we got a stand that the bowl sits in, she hasn't worked out how to tip that up yet.

Ok, what about a metal bucket, one of those galvanised types, sunk into the ground to a depth where only the top couple of inches is showing. She would never be able to lift that out...I hope :)

A friend had a male who loved to dig out his water, and she got the big heavy calf buckets, and he has his water outside!

My pup kept doing that, drives you mad doesn't it. I bought a stand and bowl and cured the problem. Luxway's sell them. They have a website www.luxwaycanine.com, they are only showing the double ones, but I know they sell the single type. You will have to buy the bowl to go with it unless you have one that fits.
