Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Raspberry Leaf tablets
- By paganbelle [au] Date 12.04.03 15:08 UTC
I have been breeding and showing Bullmastiffs for the past 12 years and have never myself used Raspberry Leaf tablets with the bitch.

At the moment my 2 year old bitch is expecting her first litter and after speaking to a few other breeders I thought I might put her on the tablets.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has used Raspberry leaf for their bitches.

I would also like to know what dosage she should have.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.03 15:21 UTC
I used them for my bitches, and myself! Raspberry leaf tea is recommended in human pregnancy as well). The bitches certainly whelped easily enough, and my labour lasted 7 hours, start to finish. For a large breed the dosage for Denes tablets is 4 tablets a day from mating for the first five weeks, then 4 tablets twice daily till whelping.

I too drank Raspberry Leaf Tea when having my first . It is supposed to ease the birth I think . I did have an okay birth ( if any of them a ok ?? :( :) )

Hi Karen,
Is there a contact number or address on the tub label for you to contact? If there are no instructions then I would guess that, as she's a big girl, the same dosage as for a woman. They're not going to recommend a dangerous dosage for humans, I wouldn't have thought.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for your help Jeangenie (is that what I should call you?),
I read on one of the sites that for a dog her size 6 150mg tablets was recommended. The dosage for a human on this bottle is 6 500mg tablets per day.

If you know anyone that could enlighten me,I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Karen

Hi Paganbelle,
If you've found a dosage for a dog, then I would most certainly go with that - until someone who knows more about that particular make of tablets comes online. I would start off giving her 1 of your 500mg tablets a day, then for the last couple of weeks give 1 twice a day. Err on the side of caution.

Hope this helps. :)
- By paganbelle [au] Date 12.04.03 17:54 UTC
I agree. It does seem to be a very high dosage.I'll proceed with caution.

Thanks.

P.S.How did you get the emoticons?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.04.03 18:35 UTC
If you click on "Help" at the top of the board it tells you how to do them! ;) :)

Hey y'all! I didn't even know that there were tablets out there - I was just using tea (and my bitch loves it!). Tablets would be easier... Where can I get some?? I'm in the US. :)

I tried it too. However my doctor did advise it was not recommended for anyone who had a history of going into pre-mature labour? Don't know the whys or wherefores of that statement but thought it best to pass on incase any champdoggers thought they would try it with that history - best check with their GP first. :-)
- By crazymum [gb] Date 13.04.03 10:48 UTC
I've never used them during my 4 pregnancies, but I do give them to my dogs when pregnant. I give Wheatgerm Oil before mating and up to 3 weeks after, then give 1 Raspberry leaf tablet a day until 6 weeks after mating, then increase to two daily...........I've not had any problems, not really sure if they actually do any good, but I've never not given them to know any different!
- By kao kate [gb] Date 13.04.03 10:58 UTC
I didnt know you could use it on dogs as well as people! it didnt work on me I still had a 24 hour labour and went ten days over due!
But I guess anything is worth a try!

I have used Raspbrry Leaf for years and whilst I am not sure they do any good - I don't think they do any harm either. All our bitches have them but the last four have all had sections, this however seems more and more common in Cavaliers, more so now that we are breeding first litters from older bitches in order to check state of hearts etc. I am a strong believer of natural remedies so will continue.
- By serenasq [gb] Date 23.04.03 20:00 UTC
Rasberry leaf tea is recommended in human pregancies to induce labour rather than relieve labour . I used it when past due date !
Not sure of its properties concerning dogs though , A good question for the vet i think
Good Luck
- By mandatas [gb] Date 23.04.03 21:28 UTC
Raspberry leaf tablets are excellant!!!!! We also use them to help prevent false pregnancy problems. They definately do make a difference. Bitches definately whelp easier with the tablets, they help to tighten the womb (so I was told by a company who makes them). I would most definately recomend them. :)

Hi
Just a little curious but can you use rassberry leaf for any breed of dog ?
Betty
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.04.03 12:05 UTC
Yes, Betty, most definitely! :)
- By paganbelle [au] Date 25.04.03 12:34 UTC
Yes,I believe Raspberry leaf is used on all breeds. My bitch is due,she is already producing milk, which is great as of late I have had bitches not producing at all even after the pups are born. The Raspberry leaf appears to be doing the job!
