Topic Dog Boards / Health / Throwing Up from Empty Stomach

My 7-month old Cairn throws up yellow bile. I noticed she does this if her stomach is empty. If I feed her something four times a day she is fine (morning, lunch, dinner, before bed). If I am late with a meal she will throw up as well.

Is this a puppy thing that she will grow out of in time?

I think it will get less, but my 10-year old still occasionally does this, but only before breakfast, not before her dinner. But then, there's only 9 hours between breakfast and dinner, and 15 hours between dinner and breakfast.

Edited to add: there are bonios at lunchtime and bedtime, too, but that doesn't seem to be enough to last overnight.

I sure hope it will get less. Luckily a small bonio is all she needs, since she's a small dog. But the latter is also a problem - 'cause her stomach is demanding that she eats more than she should and I have to be really miserly with her to combat her getting overweight. More of a problem now as she has been recuperating from a broken leg.

Hi Stacey,
It may be something that she will keep doing, on and off. My dog did the same, always in the mornings, though not every morning, but it went on until the time he died at age 5. I kept him in the kitchen at night, as at least it was easier to clean up off the lino, but at least you know it's nothing harmful and doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your dog!

Thanks Hilda. I don't mind so much when she throws up in the kitchen, but that yellow stuff is lethal on carpets.

Sorry to hear your dog died at such a young age.

Definitely due to an empty tummy. Chelsea suffered from that early in the morning - we just made sure she ate last thing at night before we went to bed. The dogs still get two meals a day (with dry food being available all the time) and have never had a problem in the 5 years since:)

Banya has this problem too - I get up first thing and let her out, then give her 3 Shapes biscuits - seems to do the trick ;)
