Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / 5 month old puppy not housetrained!!!
- By guest [us] Date 16.04.03 15:56 UTC
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to train my puppy. When she was 6 weeks - 3 months old, she had a bladder infection that would not go away (3 different antibiotics were used!!!). While she had the infection, she could not control her bladder at all - she would be playing, standing, whatever ... and just pee right there!!! I didn't scold her because she didn't even realize she went. Now she is better, but she still pees in the house (just in little bits, it doesn't seem like she pees in the house with a full bladder). She doesn't let me know when she needs to go though. Also, I live in a townhouse which makes it even harder because she has to go down a long flight of stairs to get to the door... Ugh, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows any tricks I can use to get her to let me know when she needs to go???

Thank you ~

Just to suggest that you ensure you have cleaned up all the smells from her going in the house, but not with household disinfectant, as that usually contains ammonia which may smell to a pup that it is oK to go there still. YOu can buy stuff from pet stores to do this, or I believe a biological powder may do the trick. Probably easier to go to the pet shop, though :)

Maybe start housetraining again from the very beginning, taking her out after meals, playing, and on waking....use a word for her to relieve herself, (I use "Quickie" ) and then give her a treat and tell her what a clever girl she is. Im sure that with patience and perseverance, she will start to get the idea :)

Hi
at this age you can usually tell when pup wants to go the toilet .
Gus is 5 months now and we can tell from the way he acts when the toilet is needed .
I would keep watching and every time you even "think" pup may need to go out put her out . If she goes when you do put her out praise her LOTS !!! and maybe even give her a treat . After a while she will get to figure this out - that if she goes to the toilet outside she is rewarded .
Are you using paper in the house at all for her to use ? If so I would gradually move the paper towards the door ( or the stairs even ) .

Don't know what thebreed is, but in my breed it would be a miracle to be housetrained at 5 months.....9-12 is more realistic!

Sam
what breed do you have .
All pups differ anyway whatever the breed I think .
I know our last Staffy was not trained throughout the night until nearly TWO!!! whereas pup is dry now at 5 and half months .

Hi,

I think I would be pulling my hair out if my pup was not fully housetrained until 8 months+.

My pup is just 5 months now and has been dry in the house through the night for about a month maybe more not to sure when it happened I don't think I even thought about it. Not that it would of bothered me a mop is a handy gadget with a pup anyhow.

Okay someone is up about 5.30 6.00am in the morning but we are usually in bed by 11.30. She has a last run in the garden just before we go to bed. Then out first thing in the morning. But none of my Staffs have ever had a problem.
