I have just been called by Mark (i am at work) and told that Solo's bits are all stuck out of his sheath - says it looks similar to 2 water ballons! This has happened once before but i was around to sort it out - now he is home alone.

Do any of you know what causes this and whether he will be ok today? Will it go back by itself?

He is a 11 month old SBT - is he just being a teenager and playing with himslef a bit too much?

Help!

Hi,
I would tell Mark to splash the relevant area with cool (not cold!) water, if it hasn't gone back yet. If that doesn't work, put some vaseline on it to stop it drying, swelling, and possibly getting damaged. If it's not back pretty soon, a vet trip may be in order.

Edit: PS - it sounds as if he's been at the 'top shelf' magazines!

This happened to the male I was trying to mate with my bitch, as he turned too quick, and they hadn't tied, but the process continued, and he sat there looking like a right fool until everything calmed down.. I am hoping he will have more clue in June/July when she is next in season!!! Ifeel so sorry for his owner as she has had him Hip Sciored eye tested and really wants a son of his to do Obedience out of my Champion bitch, I just hope we get them mated, as otherwise I will have to use a proven stud, as she will be four in November, and I will be worrying that she won't breed!

I had an email today from someone questioning whether this condition - you know popping out and getting stuck - was hereditary as she had had it happen with her dog and her vet said it could be genetic????
He even said if it happened again dog would need to be castrated?? Think he called the condition "Penile Prolapse??"
I just thought it was one of those things that could happen with an adolecent male???
Any one know any more details??
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.04.03 21:04 UTC
Penile prolapse is also called paraphimosis, and is where the opening of the prepuce (sheath) is particularly narrow, preventing the engorged penis retracting. If this is recurrent then surgery may well be necessary to increase the size of the prepucial opening.

Castration seems an unusual treatment. But then I'm not a vet.

How common is this and does it tend to strike at a particular age ?
Would like to know just in case .
Alex did you mention it returned on its own or did you have to take any action ?

Sorry, lel, I don't know any more than that. :(

Hi Lel,

Solo is very much an adolescent at the moment, adn to my knowledge it has only happened twice - once i kind of popped it back in myslef (not pleasant!) and the otehr day it went back on its own... I think it would have gone back any way the first time. It causes him no discomfort - though he does like it a lot, but i think he is just being a bloke! :D His bits make regular appearances, adn he is constantly trying to mount cleo - who really quite likes it! Hasn't got his aim on though - adn expect she will properly tell him where to go if he did!

Hi Alex
Has anyone ever mentioned to you it could be hereditary as I was asked this by someone as their vet said it could be??
I thought it was just in adolesence and bous being boys :D
- By cleopatra [gb] Date 17.04.03 11:58 UTC
No - never heard of it being hereditary! The thing Jeangenie was talking about may well be - but i dont think that that applies int he majority of cases (and doesn't seem to be any narrow openings on solo !) Cantr think of it any different to adolescence - just gets too excited,a dn it takes a while for it to go down/back!!!

If it happened every time that he popped it out then i would worry!

Hi Alex

Hope Solo is ok - that tart Cleo getting him all excited.

I don't want to alarm you but I have heard of Staffie dog's bits coming out and needing surgery to keep them in. Only a couple of stiches but surgery all the same :(

Not worried - he is intensely interested in his bits so he keeps bringing them out to check that they are still there - much like a bloke constantly checking his trousers! Its not like it slides in and out involantaly - now that would be gross! :p

Typical bloke then isn't he .....

My boys are very good with that department ....

Bless
