I have a 12 week old GSD. When I first brought her home I weaned her gently onto Friskies Beta. When I had taken the required time and weaned by the correct dosage she suddenly acquired the runs. She had an injection at the vets, had tablets for 5 days and I fed on a diet of rice, chicken etc. as instructed. After reading some horror stories about this effect by Beta I have now re-weaned her on to Hills over the required time again. Today has been the first day she has had Hills without any rice or egg etc. and she has hardly eaten at all. The worst thing is she has the runs again and I just don't know what to do. She will eat it with meat or rice, but not on it's own too well. Is this normal to get the runs/not eat. Should I persevere or change food again? Please help me!

Hi,
Whilst i am certainly not a fan of any of the foods you are feeding, i think you should put her back onto what ever the breeder was feeding, and stop messing her food about.
Puppies have pretty sensitive stomachs, and i believe GSD's can be more sensitive than most.

Personally, i feed raw, and have had NO problems with it so far, including raising a pup from 6 weeks on it.
If you must feed a complete prepared food, could you consider (when your pup has settled down, ) feeding Burns, or Autarky, these are much better foods, IMHO.

Good luck with your pup, why not register, and you can post more about your dog.

Sometimes when you change over on to a new food you may experience the runs for a day or
two.I've just changed over from Pedigree Advance to HILLS he was loose but nice
and firm now.I really like Hills and fed my fisrst Golden this until 2yrs now
on James Wellbeloved and i'll do the same with this pup.
Its's down to you and your dog what you feed, so long as hes happy gaining weight and looks healthy
you won't be going far wrong.
Yes I agree with the previous post some G.s.d's do hve seseitive stomach ,my mother had
G.s.d's we found this to be the case.
Give your breeder a ring they should give you excellent advice.

We had a g.s.d that was always had loose stools until we fed a low protein diet
as he had Pancreatic enzyme deficiency at that time was no cure, but there is

one now!

A dog can also be a bit loose if it is being fed too much! And the amount on the packet is quite often a bit too much.

Our pup was "loose" when swopping over to Hills but was fine after couple of days .
See how he is after a few days
