Hi all. I noticed yesterday that some of my puppies have diarehha. We just took them to them VET on Friday for a 1 week check up and to have the their back claws removed. He checked them and said they were perfectly healthy. Well last night I noticed their poop is really watery and my husband said 2 of them threw up. He said the throw up was white so he thinks they could be eating too much from what he has read.
How do I help them if they are eating to much. How long should I keep mom out of the box per day. Are they suppose to eat every 4 hours now or something since they are 9 days old. And how do I help their diarehha and make sure they dont get dehydrated? Help please!

For a start 1 week is very late to have claws removed - in UK it must be done before 4 days.
And at 1 week they will not be eating too much. Their mum should be with them as much as she wants, ideally 24/7 apart form going out for exercise. So don't keep her away from them. If they have diarrhoea and are throwing up
they are not healthy. They may have picked up an infection at the vet. Get the vet to do a home visit.

Hi
The pups will feed on mum as and when at the moment, and should be left to suckle when they like, they can't be getting too much, they shouldn't have the squirts or be sick, so I would get back to the vet and explain what s happening and he'll point you in the right direction, as having the squirts and being sick will de hydrate them and also cause them to lose weight and at nine days old can be serious.
Mum usually gets in and out of the box to clean the pups and shouldn't be kept away ( I'm Not suggesting that you are ), just given a bit of space if she wants a break.
Hope all goes well

I asked my VET before if they made House calls and they said they didnt which is why I took them in. Also, while I was there, they told me that getting them declawed at 7 days old was still pretty early and that it was ok, which is why I did it. I am gonna try to call to see if any VETS are open today though I doubt it(It's Sunday) Hopefully I can find one that makes house calls.

Hi
I imagine all vets are closed today being Sunday but I'm sure they all have an emergency surgery appointment or house call availability, which is what you need.
Have no idea how you carry on with dew claws but ours here are usually removed very early, I'd have thought it was barbarik to have them done any later than a few days.Poor babies.

Barbarick?? This is all news to me. When I go into a Vet I usually trust what they say since they are the ones with the degree and are the professionals. Why would they tell me to do something to them thats barbarick. I hope they wouldnt. I wonder if maybe it's that procedure that caused them to have the upset stomach and diarehha. Oh man, I didnt know it was bad for them. They told me it was ok.

Hi
I would get the pups sorted out asap, and then do some reasearch on dew claw removal when they are well again, the most important thing is to get some vet attention for the babes now, and mum may need antibiotics as she may have passed something on to the pups, I don't know it's all speculation really but they do need some kind of medication.
Let us know how you get on.
Tracey

Which country do you live in, Lolitah? I know that in the UK dewclaws are removed at 3 or 4 days of age. It could possibly be that having them removed so late has shocked them and left them more open to infection - and a vet's waiting room and surgery tend to be full of unwell animals.
Make sure the pups get as much fluid (mother's milk) as they can to try to prevent them dehydrating, and make sure they stay warm. They can go downhill very quickly when they are so young.
As Tracey says, they need vet attention as soon as possible, and the mother will probably need medication as well.
Wishing you luck.

I live in Milwaukee WI in the U.S. I just read this on a website and am EXTREMELY ANGRY!!!
"Dew claws are usually removed between the 3-4 days after whelping. Once puppies get to the 5 day mark, a puppy usually has to be sedated to do them. Dew claws are generally removed to avoid future problems with catching of snagging something and ripping. Removal also means two less toe nails to cut throughout the dogs life.Once the dew claw is removed, Nexabond (surgical glue) is used to close the incision. If done at the proper age, there should be very little, if any bleeding. Nexabond (surgical glue) is used to close the incision. Puppy may be placed on amoxi drops for 5-10 days to reduce risk of infection. "
WHen I took them to the VET Friday, they told me 7 days was still very young and they could do the pups. They did all 7 Pups in 10 mins. They never said anything to me about sedating them, as there is usually a charge for that, so I dont think they were. There paws were wrapped in gauze and tape and I was told it could be removed after 2 hours. So they did bleed. NO AMOXI DROPS WAS GIVEN TO ME FOR INFECTION. AND I was never told infection could even be a possibilty. The Mother has been on some Antibiotic for a eye infection, but that was it. I am EXTREMELY ****** by this. I trusted these people, and it seems they gave my dogs the rush job for some quick cash.

Hi
I would change your vet and sue the b*****d , at what age does he think is right for removing dew claws, I'd like to rip one of his nails out and see how he likes it. Don't get me wrong, I know it has to be done and if I ever had gsds with them i would get them removed, i just think about the poor babies it must be so sore.
Please let us know how you,mum and babies go on.
Tracey
Hi lolitah
Im afraid one week old is very late for dew claws to be removed they should be done between 2-4 days of age puppies grow so fast by the time they are a week old the claws are to big and this makes it much more painfull and a higher chance of the root of the claw being left in causing big problems laterplus the rislk of infection is greatly increased.
I would seriously consider changing your vet for one who will make house calls I wouldnt take young puppies to the surgery unless it was a emergancy because of the disease risk.
If your puppies are vomiting they are sick and need prompt veterinary attention it wont wait till tommorow puppies lose condition and can fade in a mater of hours
sorry Im not trying to alarm you but better safe than sorry
