Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Tom and Jerry antics in my home!!

Well...having tackled the subject of son nipping I am now going to ask for advice on Cat chasing! I have a 7 year old Cat ( Joe Buck) and a 15 week old Staffie ( Ruby Tuesday ). I introduced them pretty gradually, and Rubys been with us since she was 8 weeks old. They dont get on too well though Im afraid. Ruby tries to pinch his food and occassionally tries to jump ontop of the cat! Theres alot of growling, barking and general chasing around Tom and Jerry fashion, and the cat has swiped at her a few times in defence. I reckon the cat would be quite happy to ignore and tolerate Ruby but Ruby wants to play.
So, any advice on how to handle this? I wasnt too worried until someone told me a horror story about a Staffie tearing up a cat, and said that Staffies always hate cats! HELP!! Please tell me there is a solution to this cos I couldnt bear to part with either of them. I always thought theyd be ok if I introduced the dog as a puppy.

Staffies always hate cats.
I don't know who told you this, but it's not true. Your staffie is playing with the cat. I'm betting kitty is not playing with the pup. Make sure the cat has a safe place to go, where the pup can't get at her. Teach the pup what no means and remove pup from cat. You will just have to protect the cat for a while, as most of this will go away as the pup matures. I know it's hard to believe right now, but they could end up as best of friends.

Thanks ,you are right actually, I do think Ruby is trying to play! I dont think she can tell that Joe is not another puppy! But the cat is having none of it! Thanks for your advice though, its nice to know that Staffs arent Cat crunchers as I was lead to believe!!

Hi LadyMojo
we too have a Staffy pup ( now at the grand old age of 5 and haf months) plus a cat . I posted the very same question when we brought pup home at 8 weeks . :)
Like you Gus just wants to play with Noodle the cat and she too doesnt want to know .
Gus has never attacked the cat or acted in a threatening manner towards her although he will chase her ( wilst wagging his tail ) but will stop when told "NO!!!" firmly . Like Tyrra says always have somewhere cat can retreat to or jump up onto out of the way.
I find pup irritates poor Noodle rather than her being scared of him . She will actualy jump on my knee when he is fast asleep next to me on the sofa .
I do know Staffs that do not like cats ( and I know some are *encouraged *to give chase for idiotic reasons)but I think it is wrong to say that all Staffs HATE cats . When brought up with each other I think they learn to tolerate each oher at least .
I think its just a matter of trying to get pup to understand that cats cant play the games they like :D
Good luck and mail me if you need any more advice
Lel
PS; what colour is pup ?

Thanks Lel, thats very helpful! To answer your question Ruby is mostly white with a big brown patch over each ear and eye, a real cutie. Recently shes started getting dark patches under her white fur though giving her a sort of dalmation effect!
