Gus is entered for his first show next month ( gulp ) and I would love some tips on how to keep both myself and him calm and relaxed .
He is easily excited ( just adores everybody ) and I need to keep him focused while he is there rather than getting distracted . Easier said than done .
Other than a magic wand , someone must have some good practical advice that they used with their own pup
I have visions of the judge listening to my knees knocking together with nerves and Gus bowling him over with sloppy Staffy kisses :)

Best advice for your first show? Don't take it seriously!

Honestly, just go for the experience. All the 'old hands' had to do it for the first time (I can sense Admin making a sharp intake of breath, wondering what I'm going to say next...) You never know, you might even enjoy it.

Think of it as a learning experience for both of you. Good luck - have fun! :)

Edit: think of swans - on the surface, all is smooth, serene and tranquil. Beneath the surface we're paddling like buggery!!!!

The most important thing...I think ......is to arrive with plenty of time to spare, I still do after 30 years of showing, this gives me time to relax, let the dog(s) do their business, and for me to practice with them a few times to help get both of us into 'show mode'. We all get nervous before we go in but take a few deep breaths before going in, and remember all the things you have learnt at ringcraft.

Remember it IS FUN and you always go home with the best dog.................even if they don't win

as everyone else has said just enjoy it.Look on it as a learning experience and watch and listen to advice.Don't be afraid to ask questions(outside the ring).
I think I had the best initiation into showing possible-I bought an Elkhound pup from a very well respected knowledgable breeder.Unfortunately he was a rather ugly youngster and was placed last every time out in the whole of his puppy career!!It continued into his junior classes but I still had no intention of quiting-I was having far too much fun.Once he left junior and started in post grad he started being placed-3rd at Blackpool,1st at Leeds,2nd at Driffield etc.Until we managed a 2nd in a good sized class at crufts.My point is I now go into the ring expecting to come last and am never dissapointed if it happens.Its nearly a year now since hes been out of the first 2 and its still such a thrill.
