Topic Dog Boards / General / Boxers - Brindle and Red

Hi everyone,

I have been speaking to a few people who are expecting litters of boxer pups soon and they all seem to be brindle. Is this because the reds are less common or have I just not looked far enough? I am thinking about getting a boxer pup this summer and am not particularly bothered about the colour, I am just curious.

Thanks,
Jen

By red, do you mean a dark fawn? Fawn can be very light to quite reddish.

I just meant fawn really, not any particular shade. I have heard it called red before, sorry for the confusion :D

Hi Jen
If you are in the UK they are known as Reds fawns to us is a slightly uncomplimentary way of describing a wishy washy Red.
For a while now in the Uk the top winners in the show ring have been largely Brindle and as we like to breed for the best and not for colour (most of us) the fact the dog is Brindle or Red comes way down on the list of attributes. The Brindle colouring is also more dominant so logically more will be born.

Just recently we have seen a couple of very good quality Red males in the ring so perhaps the numbers will be a little more balanced in a few years I think as with most things you find trends and it may go the other way in the future. To me a Boxer is a Boxer whatever colour.

Thanks Debbie,

I was just curious about why the brindles outnumbered the reds. I'm hoping to start showing in the near future so might bump into you at a show some day :O)
