Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Quick Question

I went to ring craft during the week and we were all talking about the show this weekend that we are all going to , lots of us have the same breed so we will all be in together, one of the ladies who has been in the breed for years knows who else is going and she said she knows who will win BP and BOB.
Now i know what you are thinking how does she know no-one should know , but so far she has known every winner for open shows and champ shows before the event this year.
My question is how can this be?
I know that there are a lot of quality dogs out there but she picks diffrent dogs depending on the judge and she is always right.
Are judges this predictable?
i take it it's not worth going anymore

If you have been around a while, and know the dogs, and the type oif dog the judge goes for you can make a pretty accurate guess at times what will win, especially6 at the smaller shows, where there will be some obvious winners and losers, and those not up to beating mature adults.

Well i have just got back and she was spot on the 7 month old puppy won BOB and BP beating all the junior , grad and open dogs.
Bit strange with the giant breeds as pups look like pups.
Well i think that i will change breeds :)

Hi Peanuts

I have heard about this sort of thing before. I have never shown before but I hope to start when I get my new pup. What breed do you show?
- By dizzy [gb] Date 13.04.03 08:09 UTC
perhaps the puppy is nearer the breed standard than the adults -in which case it deserves to win, you dont win on age alone, and if the owner has a reputation of winning then she probably has it because of the quality of the dogs she exhibits, ----you'll probably understand it better the longer you show, until then dont listen to the bitter ones that cant see anyone elses dogs qualities other than their own , -as for going into another breed im afraid all breeds have big winners , clever breeders in them, youd be better off watching and learning until you can see why certain dogs exhibitors are winning ,

I say good on the judge for putting a pup as BOB, if it is the one that best suited the standard. I've been to so many shows where a pup has been the best one in the breed but because it's a puppy it hasn't been given BOB. Though I have been to shows where you know which ones going to get it and you know it's not the best one there on the day and everyone around would say the same, you just never know!!! I've also been to shows where everybody has said ooh, so and so's going to get this and so and so's going to get that at one of them it ended up me getting the res. cc and res. best in show so that was a shock to me and I should think some of the people at the show:d

Well considering the puppy had no coat and was lanky very lanky as big puppys are and the open dog winner was fantastic with full coat stunning animal with has 2 tickets and a reserve from crufts just gone and was the best thing that was there , i still find it had to fathem out, but there you are, everyone on here knows best.

everyone on here was asked------so we gave you different possibilities-------why ask if your going to take the attitude you have , here you are is this better ?????? "YOUR RIGHT!!!!! ALL JUDGES ARE BENT !!!! AND WE KNOW NOTHING !!!
- By peanuts [gb] Date 14.04.03 08:12 UTC
Where on earth did i say that judges are bent?
Well i don't think that i am the one with the attitude problem am i!!
I take it all quite light hearted as showing goes , as i am not trying to win crufts just have some fun.
What i meant when i said everyone on here knows best means that you have all been showing much longer than me and that you know better than me.
Maybe i did not word it the correct way, but i take it that you feel that if you start shouting at people it makes you feel better.
Hope that you will have a better day today.

your comments re judges picking dogs when everyone knows who theyd pick already suggest the judge is bent-more so the comment about the lanky puppy winning over a dog with cc's etc, or am i picking you up wrong, perhaps you explained that badly too????? if so could you put me right.??? as for shouting please can you point that out to me too?????
and my day today was just great-as was yesterdays thankyou,

It seems that you have read for more into this than is really there.No-where does it say that everyone can pick the winner.
If you read what i put in the first place , it says a friend of mine who has the same breed as me can pick the winner before the event happens.
So where does it say that i think all judges are bent? I also put in it will take me a while to fathem it out, which means i am not a know all!!! And that i am still learning.
As for shouting , when you type in capital letters it is taken as someone shouting at you.
I meant no harm by any of my comments only to ask how people would know everytime before it happens. You seem to have taken this to heart ( why, i don't know ) but it was not aimed at you or anyone, and after the event i just let you all know what happened , whats wrong with that?

time after time new folk [novices] write about everyone knowing who would win what., to the extent if they won the judge was fair, if someone else won the judge wasnt, as i said you'll learn through time when you understand the breed standard etc why the dogs that win do---im not saying theres never a judge that judges the person and not the dog,
i suppose by typing in capitols it could be classed as shouting, however i meant it just to stand out .
i still feel the way you asked and then said that everyone on this board knew better was open to be taken as sarcasim, im not taking you personally at all, only answering your post ,
- By peanuts [gb] Date 14.04.03 20:45 UTC
I was over the moon with just being placed to be honest with you, the competition was really good and i was happy with the result of my class , and no i did not win the class.
I am sorry that it came across wrong and i did not mean to sound like judges are bent , just could not understand why people always knew who would win before the event.
But you come across as a experianced person with showing and you would know better than me the judges are not influenced by the other end of the lead at all, i was told by other people that it does happen thats all.
Hope that we have sorted this out and no offence taken

In response to your earlier point and earlier points made about judges. I think Our Dogs are interested if any CC awards can be predicted to see if there are 'bent' judges. They are willing to act as an 'independant' and go to the KC if judges are that predictable if results can be predicted. What I will say is that even after 30 years of showing it still makes me wonder how predictable some judges are....and how 1 dog can have 2 sets of results depending on which handler has the dog, even under the same judge!! and the same day!!!! I know some of you are going to say it must have gone differently but I was there, and it didn't! I know after many years you should be able to go for a TYPE the judge should like....but he very dog....even if its not the handlers usual type!!

But as I have been told by some 'old school' judges the only thing you should be able to say about the handler is what colour shoes they have!!! If only that were true of ALL judges
