Hi everyone,
Thank you for all the input the last few weeks! My bitch delivered only one puppy today and it was still born. I was very dissapointed as I have been waiting years for this litter, lost one bitch six months ago to pyometra and three times my bitches have missed in six years but this time I taught my luck had changed around I guess not. The main thing is my bitch is doing great and that's what counts.
take care,
Justine

What a disappointment for you. :(
Poor bitch, too - she must be confused. Will you ask your vet if they know of a foster mum needed?

Thank you everyone for your kind words.
I believe the umbical cord detached too soon before she could push him out. She had great contractions and pushed the puppy out easily, but it was too late for the little one. I'm thinking of trying to breed her again but I haven't decided yet, I don't know how many more dissapointements I can take, and yet backyard dogs and abandoned dogs always seem to whelp without problems or help!! What are we doing wrong?!

Justine, I had the exact same thoughts when I had my litter. Firstly their mom didn't produce enough milk so I was up into the night supplement feeding 9 pups with a bottle. Then when they weaned they decided they didn't like food in any shape or form and were going to starve themselves. It was a very hard time for me. My thoughts where like yours, why do stray dogs breed and raise unwanted pups so easily. Why do puppy farmers who leave their bitches in sheds to cope on their own manage to raise littters.
Your thoughts are very normal and very human and I hope if you do decide to try again things will work out for you.
They did for me, you should see the size of the 9 month pups now!!!!!!! :D

I agree with you and often wonder myself... I think we can only do our best it does seem unfair at times, raising 9 pups eh ... bet you longed for a good nights sleep,

Hi Justine,
I breed Bullmastiffs and 11 days ago one of my bitches whelped 6 days early.
Out of 9 pups only 3 are still with us.The bitch had no milk and the pups just were not strong enough to fight.
It is so heart breaking when the little darlings die.I know how you feel.
One of my other bitches has been pregnant twice, both times with only 1 pup.
Both times the puppy was stillborn.I've decided she just isn't going to be a Mother.
Breeding problems seem to be very common recently. Many other breeders I know are having problems getting their bitches in whelp. Then when it comes to time to have the pups the bitch either has no milk or she has to have a c-section.
I have a bitch that is due to whelp in 4 weeks and have decided to put her on Raspberry Leaf tablets,as I understand they can help with many aspects of breeding and pregnancy.
Hope everything works out well for you.Good luck.
Karen
