Hi all ,
We have a crate for our pup is a large crate with lots of space , we made it up exactly the same as his bed , he will go in there occasionaly to sleep , but if you close the door he goes mad!
He whines , barks and scratches on the door and will not stop . When he first went in there we gave him on of his buiscuits and during the day when we closed it he was fine after a little whining . But in the evening n oluck until you let him out or open the door and then he will go to sleep. why?

Also he goes to the window and whines at the front garden and front door.

How long do you let him in the crate??

How old is he? A dog should not be in teh crate while you ar eat home. A dog wants to be near you. This means all the time. In the night i would put the crate in my bedroom. He will hear you when you sleep. If you go to work put him in the crate. close the door and turn on the tv or radio.

He goes in on his own during the day though i dont close it unless we are going out for a while - but i would prefer him to be downstairs at night. He slept fine at night since we got him , and he slept fine last night as long as you dont close the door.

why do you close the door then try and confine his space with the crate door open we bought two gates and he has run of the hallway and kitchen suits him fine as his bed is in the hall and bowls in kitchen also he sleeps next to the radiator on low he loves being snug :)

why because I would like him to sleep in there at night , is safe for him.He sleeps in the kitchen , the crate is for him to sleep in the evenings and was planning to let him out in middle of night for toilet etc. Otherwise he seems to do number 2,s everywhere and keeps on pulling out plugs. (this is the only suitable room for him until he is fully trained

I have a cocker puppy and she sleeps in the kitchen at night in her crate. We put an old flanelette sheet on top hanging down the sides as a cover. She also has an old sweater of min in the crate with her. We have a gate by the kitchen door so she cannot get out of the kitchen. At night she goes in the crate but as soon as I leave the room she gets up and lies down by the gate - Then when all the lights are out and I have gone to bed she walks over to her crate and gets in it to sleep for the night. She whines and barked when we first got her for 4 nights - I only went to see her when she was quiet. She has now settled beautifully and does not make any noise at all. Only locked her in first 2 nights so she understood she had to go to sleep. Think its cruel so now her crate if left open and she gets in it and goes to bed. Please persevere he has to learn you cant be with him all the time.

You have got to let him learn you cant be with him all the time or the whining will continue as for putting him in your room thats ok if you are willing to let him up the stairs later on in life if not then dont bother and try not to make a fuss when he whines he will do it all the more i used to have the same problem and yes i took him upstairs for 2 days only once he realised we were just sleeping he settled down again downstairs i used to put an old peice of clothing with my scent on and a warm hot water bottle he soon went to sleep with a biscuit:)

tha's an idea. Put a old sweather in the crate and close it. But you need nerves. A lot of them.

Good luck

Why don't you try putting a blanket over the crate so to make it enclosed also try to not let your pup out every time that it crys as it will learn that when it wants to come out, no matter what time of day, you will let it out.I know its hard but thats the only way it will learn that you are the boss and not the dog.If it sleeps in there during the day and you don't need the door closed then thats fine but it's safer for all for it to be closed at night.Hope this helps.

well ive tryed the blanket etc and he is sooooooo persistent . Do you think it is possible to teach him during the day to be in the crate and then perhaps he will get the idea at night?

I want to put him in crate during the day to train him that its not a bad thing and then take him out when he stops screaming. He is very loud for a very little pup and my daughter wakes up in a really upset when she can hear pups going crackers. Would training during the day get him used to crate in evenings?

thankyou all

help of I'm afraid i think some dogs just don't like being confined. My pup used to be left during the night in a crate, she used to whine and bark for hours even if she had just been to the toilet. crate trining for the car never worked, she just went mad. However i could leave her for a few hours during the day and she would be fine as she had the run of the house, so she didn't get separation anxiety. She did toilet train quickly which made it easier. We tried the blankt over the top - which made her worse, we tried a low radio so that she could hear noises, a hot water bottle, a sweater of mine but nothing worse. Eventually one night she had ad enough, she went nuts breaking out of the crate (admittedly it was wooden) a and ripped the carpet by the door to pieces. In the end we gave up and she now sleeps on her bed next door to mine, and i've had very few problems. It isn't ideal, but i certainly get more sleep! I think some dogs just don't like being enclosed, unfortunately.

Hi All ,
Thought i would post an update as last night my little Oscar slept in his crate all night :)
As you all know he was not very keen on having his crate locked , but was fine if i put him in asleep , anyway last night I stayed up a bit later and he was a very sleepy pup . He got in his bed and after 2 mins I locked it , he looked at me and i thought here we go but nothing . I left a night light on for him (from a small fishtank) and he slept all night without any noise. This morning hiscrate was clean.
So fingers crossed in the hope he will continue to do the same ! Am hoping its not like a baby and sleeping through the night , a one off lol :)

That's good to hear. I've found with Dylan that if I look him in the eye when he's in his crate, he will whine to come out .
