I Have a nineteen week old x breed pup. How far is it safe to walk a puupy of that age?

What size is the pup likely to be when adult? It varies depending on the breed/size. We have quite a large breed, so we just had sniffs for the first nine months and lots of socialising. We've just started to build up the distance but have to wait until he's at least 12 months before we can go for proper walks.

I'm a firm believer in letting puppies run off lead, especially with other dogs, be careful of their size though. It helps them socialise and make friends which they will tend to keep in the years to come. Too much lead work, if the puppy pulls against the lead, can be harmful. All my puppies have been off the lead once they had their injections, in the care of an older dog. My youngest one has had two best puppy in show awards and a first at Crufts so I must be doing something right.

hi,
like julie has said depends on the breed, young pups get enough exersise running in the garden, just buid it up slowly on the lead, down the end of your road so it gets familiar with traffic, people etc, not much difference than children, just because a child has taken it's first few steps we don't drag them around the shops walking for two hours do we, regards tina

Xena,
With puppies it is easier to think about time, rather than length of walk. For a puppy of that age a walk of about 20 minutes should be about right, but I do not mean 20 minutes of nonstop walking -- I'm counting stop & sniff time as well. For any puppy, walks should be over nondemanding terrain and at an easy, slow pace.
You can build up time and pace as your puppy grows up.
