Hi guys, i was just wondereing if any of you have experinced intussusception? My girl has had an intussesception and was operated on on Wednesday after vomiting since last saturday. everything went well and the vet removed a section of bowel, i took her home and everything was fine until yesterday when she started vomiting again. I know that they can sometimes re twist and my vet may have to remove more bowel, but does any one know any more about this condition ? i have only seen one other case and we only had to operate once and my nursing books say naff all. I am really worried about her as she has lost 5 kgs already, I am taking her back today for a re exam. :(

Sorry to hear about your dog :-(

Have you tried typing 'canine intussusception' into a Search Engine? It does bring up some information that may be of value to you :-)

Good luck

Is that like a lower bowel obstruction where they remove some of it, or am I thinking of something different?

Hi dollface, it is when a piece of intestine folds in on itself. If you make a circle with your thumb and forefinger, and then put your other forefinger into the "circle", thats the sort of thing that happens with the intestine. One section sort of collapses and folds in on itself and then pokes back into the wider piece of intestine. Sorry I cant tell you a better discription, I cant think of any other way to describe it.:)

its where the bowels telescope in on each other for no apparent reason in my case.

We had a 7 week old pup with the problem, my vet at the time was great & operated straight away. We were lucky it did not re occur even though we were warned it could. That was 8 years ago & my boy has never looked back. On a sadder note one of his sons had the same problem at 11 weeks & was not so lucky.

Hi DF, thinl it`s were the end of the upper bowel gets sucked into the the lower bowel. It happened to one of my males after he swallowed a sock but after he was operated on he was OK. Hope your dogs OK too.

Hi everyone many years ago. I had a young GSD who had suffered a bad bout of gastro, he ended up having this, they operated at 4 months old, and he lived until 10, we never had a problem with him, it was caused by retching and bad diarrohea they said, but in all honestl I really dont know that much about it, let us know what u find on the condition

My lab puppy had it earlier this year, it was in a really awkward place too, near a sphincter, but the operation was succesful and she has never looked back. It was caused by a bout of diarrhoea which causes the bowel to 'speed up' and then telescoping is more likely, and is apparently quite common in puppies. The vet did tell me that they sometimes can stitch the bowel in place if the problem is reoccuring.

I was just wondering if it was a lower bowel obstruction (don't know the doctors medical word for it) because that is what I had when I was a baby, and my uncle did to. I was told that it could happen again and hasn't yet. My uncle has had it happen 3 times I think. Lucky for me I only needed the one operation (my mom was told that its more common in boys than girls). It had to do with the intestines twisting or something like that. The way it was explained it sure sound like the same thing. Sure hope your dog is doing better and it doesn't happen again.

hi, chloe is back to her usual self today, after barium xrays and bloods showed everything is working ok, I am little puzzled as to why it happened as she is nearly 3, and there is no foreign body or any thing that would give me an answer as to why it happened. i will probably never know and at least now she is getting better. thanks for your advise.
