My husband wants to get a digital camera. His favourite camera manufacturer is Olympus (I have to admit that the Olympus APS he bought me some years ago has been superb). Have any of you Champdoggers got/had an Olympus digital, or for that matter another make and if so, what model, what did you think of it and would you recommend it?
Thanks for any input. Your completely unbiased opinions will be appreciated.:D
Jean

I have no knowledge of Olympus cameras other than to say their reputation is and always has been good ...I do know though that a lot of people have commented on the quality of the pics I take ever since we bought our camera ..it is a Sony DSC-P9 ..bought last year

Depends on how much you want to spend. We bought a NIKON COOLPIX 5700 for xmas. Pricy (bout £800) but well worth every penny. has a 8x Zoom and you dont loose any quality when zooming in on the photo.(5.0Mega Pixels). Dont know how we survived with a normal camera. We have so many pictures on our PC that we are rapidly filling up the harddrive. Invest in a large memory card and you wont look back. You can be snap happy and not worry about te cost of developing.(We get about 80 pix on a 120mb card. Top quality camera but pricey.

I have a Fuji Finepix 4900z - cost £650 a couple of years ago. Great camera but pricey. image quality depends on settings but can do very large images easily. Will produce high quality images of 22 inches!! It really depends what features you want and what your budget is. I bought a Kodak for my daughter for Christmas - great deal for £165 when the RRP was still £300. Very simple to use, has a zoom (optical) and 3.1 megapixels. My mum had a Nikon Coolpix bought for her for crimmy too - cost about £200 - but it is a really fabby little camera. Wish I'd seen it before I bought the Kodak. Super size, neat, easy to use and around 3.1 mega pixels too - so good quality images.

PS - I upgraded my whole PC to cope. Went from a 20gb hard drive to 60

to cope with all the images - but I would never go back to film.

We've got a Nikon Coolpix 800 - bought it a couple of years ago (was working for a company who sold them, so got discount) - excellent camera, don't think that it is quite as high-spec as the 5700, but would think that a current version would be very good :)

Hi Jean,
We have an Olympus C-2020 Z (probably nearly obsolete now) and it has been excellent. Even though it is only 2.1 mega pixels (which isn't exactly top of the range now) it prints excellent photos at 10x8 inches (near enough A4). I would definitely choose Olympus again.
For very detailed reviews of all the latest cameras, go to
Steve's Digicams.
Good luck with whatever you choose. :)

I was about to post the link to Steves digicams a really excellent site with possibly too much info but go look see.
We have a Nikon 885 which is wonderful to use.
A couple of minor points to consider with any digital camera IMO
Optical zoom is very useful digital zoom is no use
Battery life is critical. We had a Nikon 950 which was generally OK (so we did get another Nikon) but ate batteries.
The other aspect of digital is that there is a perceptible time delay between shutter realease and image being taken. So action shots are very difficult we have found.
Use as large a memory as you can get that is compatible with the camera. You can go down in quality but not up.

hi,
I've had a Fuji digital camera - was fantastic (till stolen) and now have a Kodak digital camera. Both very good, high quality resolution. Kodak slightly simpler to use (prolly cause it is a newer model). My friends bought one off a site called Novatech and it set them back about £35 quid and it's not bad quality but can't store a lot of images. You should be able to get a realy decent one for £250-300. ( I used to have to sell these things!!) Go for optical zoms over digital.
There said my piece, going to bed now :)

Hi
I have just bought a Fuji Finepix 4600Z (i think).
Easy to use, (in fact its idiot proof) and superb pictures.
I got it through Ebay from a chap in the states. He was very accomodating and it arrived within 3 days. Total cost was £156.

I have two Fuji digital cameras, an s602 and an a303. The 303 will fit into the palm of your hand and is very very good. It has 3.2 million pixels with a 3x optical zoom, very important and can be bought on the net for around £200. The s602 has a 6 million pixel capture with a 6x optical zoom and is a brilliant camera but expect to pay around £540.

Hi Jean,
I changed from a Kodak to a Fuji s602 at Christmas. I must admit that I'm very happy with it and hubby bought me a telephoto lens and a wide angle lens to attach to it as well. I've found it great for speed shots as I was finding that my old Kodak camera was giving me blurred images but now I switch this to sport mode and get great results at dog rallies. Great resolution and a great quality print out.

It's nice to get threads that really interest me, digital photography. I am really sold on digital, after years of slaving away in a room blacked out from the daylight it's a pleasure to sit in front of a computer screen and manipulate my images. As I said in my previous post I have two digital cameras both Fuji. I did a lot of research before buying them, looking at tests and reviews on the web and in magazines and they all seemed to plump for the Fuji s602. As well as still photos you can also take video, although as yet I have not tried this. The results I have had are as good as any that I took on 35mm in days gone by, but the real beauty is that you can so easily alter them and correct any mistakes with a good soft ware on the computer, I use PaintShop Pro 7. Both the s602 and the a303 give good quality images to print out at A4, even after cropping. I do find it very important to use a good quality inkjet photo paper somewhere in the region of 250gsm. I use an Epson Stylus Photo 950 for my printing needs, it is a six colour printer specially developed for using the Exif 2.2 imaging system that both the Fuji cameras have

We took a couple of video clips on our s602 at Aviemore of the dogs setting off. They came out quite well - I was pleasantly surprised :) An added bonus is the 1GB drive you can buy for them.
