My 14 weeks old cocker pup has started to scoot on her bottom every now and then plus she sometimes tries to bite her tail, but obviously can't manage 'cos it's too short, bless. I read somewhere that this might be a sign of anal gland problems. The lady that I take my pup to for socialisation classes squeezed her glands and managed to get some stuff out, it wasn't smelly. I thought that after having this done she would stop scooting but she has been doing it again this morning, usually just after being to the toilet. Do some dogs do this anyway or is there a more serious problem going on? My motherinlaws dog did this all her life and she was never at the vets with impacted or ruptured anal glands etc. Sorry for going on.I am having difficulty locating them can anyone advise so that if the need arises I can clear them out myself. Any information would be great on technique etc. Thanks

The anal glands are situated either side of the anus just slightly lower down than half way. Best way is to get someone to show you how to do it first before attempting it yourself. It has been suggested that soft faeces can be a cause of blocked anal glands as they are not emptied because there isnt enough pressure from the faeces if soft to help eliminate them.
It may be that she needs a diet slightly higher in fibre than she is getting at the moment if her faeces are soft. Biting at the tail is a sign of discomfort and that is one of the ways dogs use to try to get comfort.
Would suggest take her to your vet to have her properly checked out in the first instance.
