Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Puppy won't go to toilet outside !!
- By guest [gb] Date 08.04.03 13:32 UTC
I have a 10 week old Boxer puppy (have had for 2 weeks). Am having problems getting him to go to toilet outside. He does go outside sometimes (I have put used newspaper down to encourage this), but often, I can be outside for 10mins at a time with him, he does nothing, then goes to toilet in the house after being brought inside. Also he often just goes in the house rather than "asking" to go out, or going to the back door (he seems to like hiding behind the dining room table to go!). I live in an upstairs flat, so when I do take him out I carry him down the stairs, and I don't know if this is adding to the problem - maybe the "connection" is not being made. Also I only have a back yard, all concrete and brick walls, so I dont know if he just doesn't like it out there. Does anyone have any suggestions to improve things ??

Must admit my pup doesnt like weeing on concrete prefers the grass. Perhaps when you take him outside take some soiled newpaper outside for him and place him on it asking him to go to the toilet dont stay out there if he doesnt want to go, come straight back inside (not 10m mins later, also dont play or talk to much to him) and try again when he is sniffing/circling. He obviously doesnt associate going outside with the door so it cant be expected that he will run to the door. I suspect once you get him weeing outside he will then give you some indication. Be vigilant, Sydney now runs to the door, we let him out every time he went to the door regardless if it was for the toilet or not.

Im sure there will be many more helpful replies as well. Good luck Im sure he will get the hang of it sooner or later (preferably sooner)

Hi
dont forget that pup is still very young so please dont expect too much of him
Carrying down the stairs could possibly delay the connection with going outside but he is too young anywya to allow him to use the stairs on his own.
When he does go outside heap lots of praise on him and reward with a small treat . Sometimes it takes a while for pup to understand what is expected of him but dont worry he will get there in the end ( they all do no matter how much you worry ) .
Sometimes pups tend to hide to go the toilet if they are shouted so dont make too much of a fuss .
Our pup was a little reluctant to go outside at first and we used an old towel to put down for him . Its a little comfortabler underfoot for him but it did work for us . Just an idea .
Do you put anything down in the house like newspaper , towels etc as you could gradually try placing this closer and closer to the door
