Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Male Papillon cocking his leg and peeing
- By guest [gb] Date 08.04.03 03:31 UTC
My 1yr old Papillon was very clean until he turned 9 months old when he started cocking his leg and peeing just about everywhere in the home including up against my TV etc...I really dont understand why he just started doing this out of the blue, hes now 1 year old and still doing it, he acts as if he knows this is wrong....I tried putting him in a crate for 20 minutes everytime I catch him doing it, but theres no change...in fact if I spot him doing it, he simply goes to his crate automatically without being told, as if hes saying okay, I done wrong....he NEVER poos in the house or does a full on pee, its just this spraying all the time...Please help...this is so frustrating...any tips/advice you could offer much appreciated!

Thanks
Cantona

Hi Cantona,
Is your Pap castrated? Entire males sometimes start doing this when they reach adolescence - a bitch in season in the vicinity (ie within a couple of miles of your house) can trigger it. They are marking their territory. Make sure you clean thoroughly with a solution of biological washing powder in hot water, which should clear the scent away, and when you see him do it, shout "NO!!" and take him outside. Crating will make him look upon the crate as a punishment area, not his den, and could make him resent it, and 20 minutes is IMO too long, because after 5 minutes he'll have completely forgotten why he was put in there, (if he understood in the first place!)

Hopefully you'll be able to stop him doing it. You may have to consider castrtating him if not - I've never heard that castrates do this, but then I've never owned one either!

Good luck. :)

This is teritorial scent marking, and it started because he reached puberty. He is putting his scent down in inappropriate places.

Many male dogs do this unfortunately if they need to boost their self esteem, there is a rival male, a bitch in season somewhere etc.

Castration usually does lessen the sexual need to do this, but I have had castrated males to visit who still cok their legs in my kitchen to put their smell over the resident canines I assume (I own only bitches), this is the reason I will only mind friends female dogs!

My friends dobie male in adolescnce was terrible for this, he in fac t blew all the elecrics when he peeded into a wall socket!

She resorted to crateing him for a couple of weeks any time she could not watch him and as she works full time this meant he wqas crated for a couple of hours at a time, I would go in and let him out and play with him several times a day. This coupled with vigilance and telling him no sternly when he was thinking about lifting, and keeping him crated at night for the next few months did the trick.

I wopuld keep him confined to easily washed areas of the house. Wash any annointed places with biological washing powder, which breaks down the smell, and then wipe over with a solution of bicarbonate of soda or vinegar, bioth excellent odur neutralisers (if you don't mind the place smelling like chip supper, :D)

But there's no guarantees, BB - a castrated dog can still mount and tie with an in-season bitch! :)
