We are considering breeding our doberman bitch and were just wondering what it costs to get a good stud for her. Any other info on breeding dobies would be great. Thanks..

Hi Sascha
Have you had your female hipscored ? it will be difficult to find a good dobe to use at stud on an un hipscored female, you might have had it done but just wondered ?

Hi Tracey,
No we haven't had her hip scored yet. She is still only eight months old so we have a while before we can breed her but it is something we are really considering so that's why I am getting all the info I need now to prepare as I want to do it properly. I've heard abount hip scoring do you know exactly what it involves.

Hi
Iknow its one of the test that dobes have done, a dobe breeder will give you more info on any other tests required and will reply soon I'm sure.
Hip scoring is where an x ray is taken of the hips either under sedation or GA, the x rays are then sent into the BVA by your vet,and a panel of experts will decide on a score based on the condition of the hips, you can get a booklet from the BVA which will explain everything and also show photos of bad hips and good hips so you can see for yourself what it's all about. Basically the hip joint should show a nice mushroom shape femur head which fits closely into a small saucer..it's hard to explain really so I suggest you get the booklet it makes good reading, and if you are thinking about breeding you will need to know the facts, another good thing to buy is the book of the bitch, which tells all.
Once the health checks have been done and good results produced, you have to then decide if your female is a good specimen of the breed and worthy of breeding. The good stud dogs who have proved their worth are shown at kc run shows , so it might be worth you going to some to get an idea of what to look for,and which dog is producing good progeny.

You will also need to check your bitch for the bleeding disorder:
von Willebrands Disease. It might be an idea to do all these tests before you start looking for a stud dog :-) Good luck

Your breed can suffer from several hereditary problems, so it important you consult with and take advice from your bitches breeder.
