Hi all does anyone have a king charles caveleir and know anything about this specific breed as my 5 month old had his anal glands emptied at 3 months but the vet said it was only a little full.As he was constantly scooting along the floor most of the day well he still is and its not worms as he is wormed regular he is also vomiting not a lot but his food comes up as if it hasnt been chewed even and i am concernd as he was ok with ped chum and mixer but he was always defecating about 15 times a day and its mostly moisture but when i offer any type of complete food and i have tried most he either loves it for the time i am slowly switching and once the old is stopped no go he doesnt seem to like dried food i dont want to stay forever mixing tinned with it as he may either be getting to much or to little as they recommend so many grams a day dry plus the tinned surely would be too much He also defecates while walking along thus doing it everywhere possible and runs up and down for a good ten mins before he actually goes bit of a mad pup but im really worried by his actions your help would be grately appreciated :(

I don't know much about this particular breed but I have heard of a similar problem in a maltese/Shitzu. Seems fairly common to have anal glands emptied. I would recommend a bland diet for a while. Rice, pasta, chicken and vegetables. Perservere with the fussiness of eating because he will eat if he is hungry. My only other recommendation is definitely check with your Vet. again. Myadog

Hiya ...I'm no expert, but I have 3 cavalier king charles spaniels, and have had this breed for over 20 years. Mine are 13 years, 13 months and 6 months, all bitches. All of mine have, over the years, had problems with anal glands: one was having hers emptied every 3 months, and the vet wanted to take out the glands, but I wouldn't. (Sometimes cause more problems than it solves.)
All my cavaliers are fed NatureDiet. It's avaliable at Pets at Home and Focus Pet shops, but I get it delivered direct from NatureDiet. Since they have been on it, they have had no problems with upset tums, runny stools etc, and their coats, skin and teeth have been brilliant. It hasn't any additives or preservatives in it, and it's a holistic ready meal; no need to add anything to it. Might be worth trying your cavalier on it for a week or so, to see if it calms his tum down. (The lamb and rice one is for sensitive stomachs.)
It looks and smells lovely! So I'm sure he'd like it.
Good luck

Hi
Since on Nature Diet, no more scooting, chasing tails and biting back ends, and no "Fishy" smells!! (Mine smelt decidedly "fishy" when they had blocked glands.Yuk!!)
I bought the Puppy variety for Saffron, but now she's 6 months, she has the other varieties of Nature Diet, for older dogs.(There are about 7 varieties.) They also do a "Lite" version, for older or overweight dogs.)
Saffy has about 3/4 of a pack per day, divided into two meals. And a couple of mini Biscuit Bones at lunchtime, and perhaps just before bedtime.
If you only have one cavalier, it should work out quite inexpensive. I buy mine in bulk, 12 cases at a time, 18 packs in each case, because it's cheaper with all 3 dogs on it. I think the individual packs are about 58pence a pack, so it would cost about £3 a week to feed one.
PS. I've noticed that none of the dogs smell "doggy" anymore, even when they've been out in the rain, so that's a bonus too!!

Hi
My puppy was already on Nature Diet when I first collected her from her breeder: it was the breeder that put me on to the food actually.
I went out and bought a few different varieties of Nature Diet for the other two cavaliers, and put them straight onto it. (They were on Hills dried before.I know this isn't what you should do, but I tried mixing it with some dried Hills for a couple of days, and the dogs picked out the Hills and left it!! So I gave them the new food more or less straight away.) None of them has had an upset tum, and even when the puppy was younger, the poop picking-up is easy, 'cos this food seems to make everything solid!!!!
(I think that's what helps the anal gland problem, because if the dogs are passing sloppy stuff all the time, the glands don't empty properly of their own accord, which they should do, and therefore get blocked.)
My vet told me that dogs with anal gland problems still feel they need to "go" even after they've been, and that's another reason why they strain and produce slimy poop! Then they scoot again 'cos they can't scratch their bum!!!
Apologies to anyone reading this, who is having a late tea!!! :D
Hope this helps!

My Cav and his father both have a bit of trouble with anal glands, and neither have the brains to tell her by rubbing their bums on the ground that they need emptying, so I just check my boy's glands regularly (yuck!). Actually it's not a bad job, I'm getting quite a knack of it!

I give my dogs a teaspoon of a mixture of wheatgerm -pumpkin seed -linseed and oatbran. I mix all tigether and put in an air tight box and it last for ages. I put it in the food mixture.
You can get all from the health shop or a good chemist.
It is good for the digestive system.
