Topic Dog Boards / Health / To spay or not to spay

I have found the nurmerous discussions on this subject very interesting but confusing. I live in Australia and am deciding whether to have my 7mth Maltese spayed or not. I have had 6 large dogs, usually GSDs, spayed and never a problem. Last year I got a Maltese and it died halfway through the anaesthetic. She was 7mths. Question - do I have her spayed at 7 mths or when she is older? I am petrified that she may die as well. This may be unfounded, but I can't help my feelings. I understand the pro's and con's for the reason for the op but am nervouse about when to have it done. All opinions and recommendations welcomed. Myadog.

Hi Bev,
When you've lost one once you never feel confident about it again.....I've been there so I know how you feel. I have had bitches spayed since (not always plain sailing) but they've all survived and been fit and healthy afterwards.

I've never had one spayed before the first season; I like them to be more physically mature when they are 'done' with the uterus unaffected by hormones and with a reduced blood supply.
