Hi
Within the next six months we are planning to get another dog but we don't know what breed to get. The puppy will never be alone. As you know we have two other dogs so we need a breed that is good with other dogs. I plan to attend agility and obedience classes with the puppy. Penny my Gordon Setter needs one to two miles of walking or running a day so a energetic breed won't be a problem. I like a challange in grooming and we don't care about any amount of shedding so hair is not a problem. My family live in a large house with a large fenced yard in the country. The pup would have to be a medium to large size when it grows up
Thank you.

Hi
we all have our own ideas of what is the perfect breed. However a few of your criteria fit very well with the breed I own(or should I say own me).I have 2 Norwegian Elkhounds. They are medium sized and love exercise, are good with other dogs and people of all ages. They are not a breed commonly used for obedience or agility but can do both of these with great success.Being a spitz breed with a good double coat they do require grooming although not too much but do shed rather a lot once/twice a year.
They are also that little bit different if you want something not everyone owns as long as you can cope with the 'is it a husky,wolf.......' type questions.
They are not commonly available(not as difficult to get hold of as some though) but I've found Elkie breeders to be a freindly helpful bunch who are always willing to have a chat about there grey furry friends.
Hope you find your perfect dog-whatever breed it may be,Regards Archer.

That is interesting Archer as Sue who shows one from my F litter also has Gordons!

Have the same prob also, lots of people ask me if my sibes are elkhounds, it does get rather annoying after the 100th time :)

That is unusual dogs, you must live in an area that had a few Elkhonds around, as most of the general public have never heard of Elkhounds, but nearly everyone knows about Husky's from films and TV ads. The other breed that everyojne seems to know is the Akita, strange as these breeds are fairlynew to UK (1980 in the case of the Akita) and Elkhounds have been here since the late 1800s!

I had someone ask me at the weekend if my 2 Elks were Akitas!!Got to sat thats the other favourite.I suppose with so many Akitas and Sibes around in relation to Elks its not suprising. My hubbie was totally gobsmacked at Crufts earlier this year.We were benched directly under the sign saying Norwegian Elkhounds in 2 ft high letters and were sat with the boys when a boy walked past with his dad and asked 'what breed are these Dad?' To which his dad replied 'they're Huskies son'!!! Theres just no hope for some people.LOL
