I have a female Shih tzu 2 yrs old 13 lbs named ONA. Just today a dog that looks much like a Bearded Collie was successful in his attempt to tie with my little baby. I just turned around to turn on the hose to rinse off my other shih tzu. By the time I turned around the large dog had already got ahold of Ona. I ran as fast as I could to stop him from mounting her but it was too late. I have heard of a shot that Ona could get to terminate the pregnancy but I also heard that it may be harmful for Ona. I thought about just getting her spayed right away but I would really like for her to have another litter with a pure bred shih tzu. I am pretty certain that she would not make it thru the pregnancy due to the fact that the male is so large. Could someone please give me some advise on what might be the safest way for little Ona to get thru this, and how long do I have to wait if she is to get the shot?

I would ring your vet this morning and see what they suggest. there is still time to have the injection. Although there is a slight health risk associated with it, I would think having a litter by this dog would be more of a risk - when you weigh up the pros and cons. With the injection she will come back into season, so you would have to keep her very safe as she could be caught again - and they cant have a second injection in the same heat. But talk to your vet first thing today, if I were you. If she does have the injection, the chance of contractng pyometra is higher than normal, but as long as you look out for symptoms - (drinking lots - tummy ache - reluctant to get out of bed, may or may not have a vaginal discharge) and take to the vet immediately if she displays them, in your shoes I would probably opt for the injection, but I think it would have to be done early today.

First i would like to thank everyone for your advise it has been a great help in making my decision. However, my vet is not open today and I still haven't found a vet that will give the shot could this be considered an emergancy or will it still be ok if I bring her in tomorrow?

When this happened to me 13 years ago the jab was given 48 hours after the mating. I don't know if there are different products now. There is a new one that can be used up to mid way through pregnancy, though obviously the sooner the better!! :D Good luck

I woulg get her to the vets straight away ! there are risks involved in given the hormone injection but in this cas I think the pro`s out way the cons
just be very vigilant after she has had the jab and dont forget the jab will often make them stand for a dog again so keep a good eye on her so you dont get a repeat performance.
Unfotunatly the injection doesnt always work a friend of mine had a terrier that following a silent heat had been mated at 10 months old by its brother he took her straight to the vet and she was given the injection and then kept well away from other dogs and she gave birth to 3 puppies!! I dont know if that is a isolated case or if other breeders on the board have come across simalar cases?

Onipoo

The injection is given at 3 and 5 days post mating, there is a risk but my experience was very good. One of my boarded bitches was mated inadvertantly (not according to my stud dog you understand!), same breeding a good mating etc but as the bitch was recovering from an infection, pregnancy was not in HER best interest. She suffered no reactions to the jab and didn't have any puppies, she is due her next season sometime in May so we will see if that has been postponed any by the jab.

Good luck with your little girl I hope things work out ok for you both.

Hi

Take her to the vet and get 'the morning after' jab, my cocker spaniel was mated by the heinz 57 variety, she had the jab which started her season again.........so you have to be extra careful again for the next month, she went on to have a healthy litter 2 years later!

WELL, I FINALLY FOUND A VET THAT CARRIED THE SHOT IN MY AREA AND WENT AHEAD AND GAVE IT TO ONA. HOPEFULLY ALL GOES WELL AND NO FURTHER PROCEDURES WILL BE NECESSARY. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR ADVISE. I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON WHAT HAPPENS. THANKS AGAIN!!
