Dylan is 3 yrs old. 9 months ago he came in limping from the garden after chasing a squirrel. Since then he has been having repeated problems affecting both front legs. He has had several anti-inflamatory prescriptions which I am sure are not good for him. The vet wonders if this is a dobermann trait as the body is large for the thin legs and that they are so fast and make very quick turns. We have been asked to give him complete rest. Has anyone tried to give a dobe rest? impossible!!! Any advice would be very welcome.

Hi Guest

Dobes, and other large fast growing breeds sometimes get something called panosteitis, often believed to be due to an inadequate diet during the growth period but by his age this should not be the cause. Nor would I expect it to be wobblers as this is more likely to affect the back legs.

However, something you say does make me wonder if you may have given the cause "body is large for the thin legs". The body should not look large compared to his legs as Dobermanns should be an elegant and muscular breed. If you can't see the outline of his ribs when he turns then he is overweight. You should be able to feel the ribs when you lightly brush your fingers along his side. Many males, especially if neutered get very heavy around the shoulders and rump.

If he is overweight, and as you have to give him complete rest then cut his food down as well, maybe a quarter of his usual portion - maybe give him something completly different (and better) so he does not feel he is being cheated :)
