Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Missy Misses Paper driving me BONKER

Missy has the idea. She can do bulls-eye targets on her paper, no probem. She's 100% in the Poo dept.

But, she is starting to get worse and worse and missing the paper when she pees. For awile it was a few inches and now it's moved out to 10ish feet, and now she's starting to make more mistakes even in other rooms (besides the paper room.) How on earth can I get her to go ON the paper? I catch her, and gently move her over-mid pee, which stops the pee and she won't pee again for hours, and then I get caught again by the same problem. She appaently thinks if she can SEE the paper, then it's legal. She'a 5 1/2 month old Pomeranian.

If my house is going to be full of pee I'm going to have to look at doing something drastic. But I don't like feeling guilty so I need help, and need it badly. I can't think of one thing to help. You guys are phenomenal so do your thing, please.

Part of the problem is that she thinks it's okay to wee and poo indoors. With many dogs one room is much the same as another, so if they are allowed to mess in one, the others get it too.

You may have to go back to the beginning of her housetraining, taking her outside when she wakes up, after meals, after games etc, just as when she was tiny, till she learns "inside bad, outside good".

Hi PB
:) sorry to smile but it reminded of when Gus was younger and he used to think as long as he had his back legs on the towel/paper it was ok - so I know where you are coming from . luckily we have a wooden floor so its a lot easier to clean .
Does pup not ask to go out at this age . Gus is only 5 months and only wets once in a blue moon in the house and that is usually because someone hasnt noticed he wants to go out .
I would start to ensure pup goes outside and praise her when she does . You can normaly tell when they want to go even if they dont actually ask you so its just a matter of keepin an eye on her . As she starts to go outside more I would not leave any paper down in the house ( maybe if you are going out leave a piece down ) and gradually wean her to going out all the time . At this age she should be able to let you know.
Good luck ]

i placed the paper outside the door so he could see through the glass thats of course if you have a see through door and he scratched to go out and use the paper then gradually reduced the size of paper until he didnt use it at all

I don't understand why you are teaching a dog to go on paper and not outside where it should be going. I always crate train my puppy's. They stay in the crate all night (when very young I take them out in the middle of night-8-10 weeks) and first thing in the morning they are put outside and told to "potty". During the day I take them out every 45 minutes, or 15 minutes after eating. Dogs will not soil their den or in this case, the crate. They quickly learn what "potty" means. If pup is caught going in the house, it is given a firm "no" and taken outside and told to potty. It doesn't take long to teach pup that he must not go in the house.

I Have to say alot of us are new to the world of dogs and training our pups . Paper training has always been the way it was once done and im sure there are a lot of people out there who do not realise they way in which you are doing it can be achieved .
Our pup is 7 and a half weeks old. He goes to the toilet during the night at least five times so i decided to paper train him until he was a bit older and then go on to outdoor training at around 12 weeks . My pup is now paper trained after 4 days and a magical spray in the no.1 department!, i know these dont always work but it may be worth you trying it . The spray is called GET OFF , it cost me £4.10 . When i got home i sprayed it over all the areas i did not want him to go and only let te paper area . All last night he only went on the paper and this morning he also went to his paper to go :) However he has decided that no,2 should go off the paper though still in his room so we are getting there .
I tried the vinegar and the bio powder but the spray was the only one that worked .

It is also easier to train outside when the weather is warmer .
Of course a puppy of just a few weeks old is going to be reluctant to go outside Tirrya when it is raining or icy ,windy and cold :(

That's why you go with puppy. It learns to go quickly and get out of the rain. The cold will not hurt the pup if it's outside for just a few minutes. You will have to train pup to go outside sooner or later, why add that extra step?

Actually I would recommend going with pup whatever the weather ( warm and dry or wet and cold ) .
No one should just expect to shove pup outside and expect him to get on with it . And there should ALWAYS be lots of praise when he goes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
