Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / DOG BITE HELP needed
- By jeanmike [gb] Date 02.04.03 20:05 UTC
I live UK, I was attacked 3wks ago and badly bitten on my ankle/leg by a dog. This was in a kiddies park
The owner didnt help me and was only worried in case I reported the dog.

I am stil in shock. I have now got severe infection coming out over the area. Spots oozing infection etc. I am worried about the wound.

I will be severely scarred.

I can make a Personal injury claim but this I no would be a waste of time the dog owner woudlnt pay and has no insurance
The criminal injuries board cant help. So theres no help?

and so I am left feeling very damaged by this and god help anyone else who has nowhere to go for help like me.

What an awful thing to happen. I really think you need to consider reporting this dog to the police - it could quite easily happen again.

I hope it all heels properly and you're not left with serious side effects.

I too would definitely report this to the police. If this happened in a kiddies park it could of very well happened to a child:( Waste no more time get on that phone!!

I hope it heels ok, please remember this is the dog owners fault not the dogs, what's that sayin "punish the deed not the breed"

I agree with Bob- you cant allow for this to happen . It could be to a child and you would never forgive yourself .
Report it at once !!!
I hope you get better soon- keep us all posted

Can't help feeling that there's something odd about this post..........
- By rachaelparker [gb] Date 03.04.03 08:03 UTC
My thoughts exactly!!!!!!!!!
- By Sammy [us] Date 04.04.03 21:20 UTC
I have to agree. . .
- By lel [gb] Date 04.04.03 21:29 UTC
Can I ask why ?
- By Sammy [us] Date 05.04.03 01:27 UTC
Not sure, maybe just because it's out of the ordinary for this board, and I'm suspicious of people just trying to get other people upset -- I know I'm probably wrong, so I apologize. Also, just rarely hear of gaping wounds described so vividly.
- By LJS Date 05.04.03 08:19 UTC
Hence my question as I am sure this will help to make it a bit clearer.

It's a pretty accurate description! I was also deeply bitten by a loopy German Shepherd and had a gaping wound. It was absolute agony when they came to stitch it because they injected the pain killer about six times into the flesh to numb it before they stitched it . I nearly went through the roof . If I described my dog bite wound as as vividly as I could then some folks might just throw up :p

If the owner was truly worried about you reporting the dog they'd have done their best to help in order to come across as a bit caring at least!! This definitely should be reported to the poice and the thing investigated! It may be too late now though, but I'm not sure about that. Whatever though you should at least call and report. If it truly is this bad the dog should be put down!

What treatment did you get for the wound when you saw your doctor/ went to A&E? Did it need stitches, and did they give you a tetanus jab? This medical record will be needed if you want to make a claim.
- By jeanmike [gb] Date 02.04.03 21:12 UTC
Hi

I was taken to A/E, The doctor said dog wounds arnt stitched now, cos the dogs mouth is dirty and they have to leave open the wound to let infection come out. But, because the wound was large and deep they had to stitch some and put other things over the other part of wound, they had to scrub it -it was awful , they had to inject it, god its all coming back to me, sorry about this. and yes I had tetanus. Then antibiotics. but i am into 3rd/fourth week and is has flared up and badly infected I go back to Doctors tomorrow she has put me on 500mg antibiotics 4 times a day (shes doubled it) if this doesnt work -supose i wil have to go back to hospital.
Sorry to come on here and moan =just found this place and found myeself letting it all out.

I of course no you all love your pets and i love animals too my daughters cat 'zeo' is scrumptious. so perhaps i shouldnt have come on here so i apologise if i came to wrong place.

thanks very much jean.

I think any responsible dog owner would be absolutley horrified if their dog had bitten someone .
Yes it may be out of character and you would be fearful that your dog could be pts but at the end of the day no dog should be biting unless severly provoked

Hi Jean,
As you have reported it to the police, and have evidence from A&E to back up your story, then you must certainly make a formal complaint. This sort of thing must be stopped.

Good luck. :)

Infections from dog bite wounds can be very nasty :(.
Hope your leg is healing nicely and you'll be up and about before long :)

Thanks so very much for your help. I was so fed up tonight with my leg and having to take more antibiotics to try and clear up infection, i thought i would search for help and ended here.
I have informed police. They have been very helpful and patient. I have to decide whether or not to make a legal statement. I dont think i have any alternative. A childs injuries would have been even more horrendus
I begged the owner to take the dog into the house whilst standing there bleeding she just shouted you had better not report this to police i asked could she get me help and ambulance. She didnt and wasnt interested in helping. I couldnt believe people could behave that way.
Anyway thanks again.
PS katrina why did u say that about my message -I find it upsetting that i come for help and you make a remark like that. I am suffering here, otherwise i wouldnt have asked for help I am trying to find help/advice for the wound as it isnt healing well, and how could u find it in your heart to judge someone that way. I just needed to talk about this. I love animals but that doesnt mean they attack and bite me does it.

Thanks again everyone ttfn jean.

Hi Jean
Make a legal statement, it's the only way to try and prevent this happening again, this person needs to be prevented from keeping dogs. He/she is a obviously a very irresponsible dog owner. If this had happened to your child you would not be hesitating.

Alison
Hope your leg get's better soon:)
- By Carla Date 02.04.03 21:35 UTC
jean - i think katrina meant it was a bit funny finding a post like this on here. sometimes you get people coming to this site to stir up trouble, so people on here can be a bit guarded.

i hope your leg gets better soon - there is no excuse for a dog biting like that, and if it were my dog it would be a one way trip to the vets.

katrina - i apologise if i have jumped the gun and assumed what you meant incorrectly :).
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 05.04.03 20:52 UTC
Hi Chloe

Exactly what I meant, thanks for standing in for me while I was off doing stuff with mad pup!

Message to Jean - no offence Jean, the message was posted in a strange way too - I guess you were just upset - understandably, like some of the others I would be interested in the details of the incident, and how the police etc respond.

Katrina

Im my humble opinion , if you don't make a legal statement you *could* be letting a child be bitten. I can see no reason whatsoever for you to NOT make a statement.

Jean

An awful thing to happen. I know as I have been bitten by a loose dog. Can you explain a bit more about how it happened as you haven't said excatly how it happened. Just that you got bitten badly on the ankle/leg? Would be interested on the type of dog and what led to the dog biting you ?

Lucy

That is a very scary thing but should a dog be put down for this ..should the dog wearing a muzzle not be sufficient ?...unless the dog is like this with the family as well ? I can not believe the owners reaction it is a weird incident ..but do you know where to find the dog and owner ?
- By Julieann [gb] Date 05.04.03 13:04 UTC
gosh been catching up on your postings and came across this one. I hope your leg is on the mend now and I too think you should report this in full. That owner is not a sensible person or a caring person to leave you like this and to tell you not to report it? Hope you get things sorted. Julieann xxx
- By dizzy [gb] Date 05.04.03 16:11 UTC
without doubt the dog should be put down!!!! dont you think its proved the damage its capable of already, -should it be allowed a second chance?
- By mari [ie] Date 06.04.03 11:22 UTC
Jean
getting bitten by a dog is a bad experience ,and is one of the most painful things imaginable
The infection is common but I feel it is going on too long so I urge you to go to hospital with it now.
Deal with the dog thing when you feel better and have a clearer mind as how to go about it.First things first. :)
The owner can be personally sued .
Insurence is to protect owner from having to pay him/her self
So small claims court seems to me to be the way to go to get back what losses you have suffered re work etc
Let the police deal with the dog its out of your hands then what it goes. i.m.p.
Hope you feel better soon Best wishes Marie

I have had to make a formal complaint.
I hate the idea of any animal being put down. But its not upto me what they do. they may just order the owners to muzzle, i dont no what they wil decide. But The dog lives next to a kiddie park where there is a playgroup for kiddies.
Unfortuanely the owners were not nice, of course they are worried i report it in case there dog is put down i understand that.
Yes i was shown where the dog lived by some children, when i repeatadly asked the owner to take the dog in and showed her what he had done, he tried to get me twice after. she eventually took him in i had asked her for an ambulance but she didnt help. she just wanted to now if i was going to report it.

thanks for your concern jean.

Apart from anything else he should not have been inside a childrens paly area.

In the dogs defence if he was playing with the children and you were jogging towards them, he might have perceived you as a threat, but this is still way over the top reaction by a normal well balanced dog.

Hopefully if this is the first incident the owners will be ordered to keep him muzzled and under control, and be fined for being so irresponsible for allowing him out aunattended, or posiibly attended by small children only.

You may also hopefully be able to apply for Criminal compensation if they are prosecuted. After all said and done if this was an unfortunate uncharacteristic incident the owner should have been sympathetic and helpful, and not compound the bad experience with rudeness and refusing to help get an ambulance.

Of course the dog is the one who will pay for a stupid owner and bad upbringing.

I was out for a jog and just going through a kiddies park, approaching a kissing gate so slowing down- 3 little girls passed me followed by a dog (he was medium height stocky thick set (i dont no the breed) he just came to me and attacked/biting my leg/ankle. it happened so quick i didnt even feel it and was shocked when i saw what he did.
I have now taken advice and today made a formal complaint to the police. Then its upto them its not my decision what happens to the dog. Ive since heard he has frightened others in an aggressive way. My Nurse looking after my leg said if he bit a childs leg it would be deeper to the bone and of course the child may not have escaped the same. I see the nurse tomorrow again -i am sick of bandages its 4 wks now i just want it to heal.
I am 56yrs ive lived all these yrs for this to happen now- lets hope he doesnt bite anyone else.
Thanks
Jean.

Hi,
I hope your leg gets better soon. Did you stipulate in your statement that you didn't want the dog to be put down? The magistrates can order that a dog be kept under proper control and be muzzled at all times when out in public. The only problem with this is if the owners don't bother keeping it muzzled after the case, then all the police can do is warn them that they are breaching the order, there are no real powers left unless it actually bites someone again and may then be removed from the owners and destroyed.
