Have a 6 month old lab dog he keeps weeing in the same place just outside the conservatory door how do I discourage this as no amount of disinfecting keeps the smell down. He has not started to cock his leg so would like to move him away from door before he starts cocking leg on door and on floor if door opened wide.

Help Stinky conservatory

Hi Carole,
Don't use anything with bleach in it to disinfect - to a dog this smells very like wee so they then mark over the spot again. There are products you can get from pet shops that are good at removing the smell, and I think that using a biological (or is it non-bio? Sorry, having a senior moment!) washing powder solution is effective.

I'm sure someone will be able to confirm which it is, bio or non-bio.

I use bleach (domestos) to disinfect and don't find that the dogs mark over the spot at all. In fact, I'd recommend it .

Hi Jan. I have no advise to give but that "having a senior moment" was good!! :)

Take care,

Greg.

Hi,
Just thought I'd give my 5p worth :)

Try washing the area down with vinegar and water, any vinegar will do. It seems to neutralise the smell. I did this when my elderly dog was incontinent and had accidents in the house. When we had a new puppy she never went where he had been and I used the vinegar on her mistakes - she never went back to it :):)

Hope this helps

Hi, he will keep going back to the same place until you get rid of the scent, this is what dogs do.
Try 'Get Off ' you can get it from most pet shops, I had a dog that kept weeing in the same place and this worked well you just spray onto the area where they keep going and the smell stops them from going.

Have you tried encouraging him away 'mid wee' with a treat and giving it to him in the place where you want him to go? Do you have a command to give the OK of where he can go? Mine learnt very young - around 15 weeks the command 'go-wee-weeies' - sounds daft but it worked -and still does (now 18 months). Always lots of praise when he goes where you have the command.
There is also a solution for urine odour neutralising, I got some from our local 'professional' cleaning store. It doesn't discourage them, but when he finally stops, its a good one to use.

Good Luck!

Could you take him out on a lead so he can't go there - take him to where you want him to go. Perhaps he will then get out of the habit of going in the 'wrong' place.

My youngest bitch on being let out first thing would go right by the back door on the concrete, rather than a few more steps to an area of grass that the dogs use for toileting. What I did was wnet out with her and prevented her from going there and waiting until she went where I wanted, and broke the habit this way.

Hi Brainless

Thanks for reply. Will go out with him and try distract him away from door. He is a great dog and goes wee wee and poo poo on command dont have problems with poo as further away from door. It just seems that he gets down as soon as out of door so he can get back in house quicker.

It was just what she would do, but got so sick of having to sluice it down each morning that I ended up chasing her away from the spot. She was quite determined and would pretend to g0o somewhere else and quickly nip back to the place if I left it!

I find that pet store odor eliminators don't work very well. I use Bad Pup'Pee, which you can only get on the net. Do a search with google. It is a retraining spray that gets rid of the pheromones in the urine. If dog is going on the carpet, I find that a stream cleaner is invaluable. Just pour the bad pup'pee on the urine and suck it up.
