when you completed the change of ownership form from the KC, did you tick to say you did NOT want to continue with their insurance? If not, they will automatically start taking it out of your card details that you wrote on the form to pay for the change of ownership.
this is very sneaky and underhand.
in the smallprint you have 30 days to cancel - so call them straightaway (if it is the KC's free insurance)
if not - cancel the direct debit and write to them telling them you don't want their insurance. £17.95 is outrageous. I only pay £11 for my Great Dane and I got 2 months free at the start!

Wow Chloe That's cheap!! Who do you insure with?
Alison

It is cheap ..but the things covered , the length of time they are covered for each illness , the replacement price for a lost or dead animal etc etc all go to make the difference.
I *could* get Hudson covered for £11 ...but I have him covered at £17.95 per month ...there are a lot of things to take into consideration when insuring your animal ..and of course , where you live can have an effect too

Hi Melody
I pay £17.95 for Kylie and £14.99 for Bob, I opted for all the "extra's" At the moment what I'm paying for Kylie seems Ridiculous as she isn't covered for her eye or skin ( because of the 14 day thing at the beginning of policy and she needed to see a vet asap )
Alison:)

That would happen no matter what Insurance though Alison ..you aren't covered for any condition that began before the Insurance takes effect (if I remember rightly) ;)

Hi...mine is with More Than and it covers quite well:
Up to £6000 cover for every injury or illness. covers the cost of consultations, x-rays, surgery, medication and alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy. also covered for as long as they need treatment
£600 towards advertising and a reward if he gets lost
Up to £600 in boarding fees for hospital cover
Up to £600 replacement cost
Up to £600 towards the purchase price if they die of an illness before reaching 11 years old
Up to £1million liability insurance if your dog causes an accident or damages someone's property
Its not bad for £11 a month.
Edited: I still think £18 a month for a dachsie is expensive!! :)

More ThanI did also ask 6 vets what they are like for paying out and apparently there have been no problems at all.

We went with morethan to insure Charlie, and when we tok him to the vets for his check up with the nurse, they suggested that they had a lot of clients who had trouble with more than and tried to get us to take on petplan. We assumed that this was just an affiliation with pet plan type thing so stayed with morethan.
We *now* know that charlie has a problem with his ears which has already resulted in him have two GA's, and is likely to need life long treatment, with the possibility of an operation every year. :( When the first sypmtoms started, we thought it was just an ear infection; we didn't see the point in claiming just for his antibiotics, and so left it. Wasn't until he needed his GA, at £175 that we decided to put in a claim.
We knew that the cover wasn't effective for the first two weeks, so we checked all our dates before we put in the claim, and were releived to find that the policy was effective from three days before his treatment started (the very first time we took him to the vets with bad ears, NOT the operation), and so we put in a claim for the whole treatment of his ears.
We then recieved a letter from more than saying that as the start of his treatment was BEFORE the policy started, they could not pay out, and they could not accept further claims for any treatment relating to this condition. When we contacted more than, they said that due to an *admin error*, the policy wasn't effective until the day of his first treatment (not three days before as we had documents to show), and so we couldn't have the payments

! We are currently trying to track this *admin error* and its cause down !!
We adore charlie, and would pay anything to keep him well, happy, and discomfort free. When we considered getting a dog, we did take into consideration that fact that it could result in vets fees, and so took the pet insurance out in order to help budget for this! Whats done is done now, and if it means that we have to find the money for operations each year for Charlies welfare then so be it, but there is no way we're going to let this one just float by!!

Hi Melody,
I also thought that a dog wouldn't be covered for a condition it already had, but my friend has got a labrador (age 2), who the vet thinks has got elbow problems (like dysplasia I think) - anyway, she advised my friend to take out insurance before she does the x-rays, etc, 'just in case', or it could cost her a lot of money. Would this be right do you think?
Hilda

Hi Hilda ..I don't know ...I would get your friend to check the terms of her Insurance first ;) Sometimes they will not cover for a condition that has been *discovered* within a certain time period of the insurance being taken out ...so whilst I can see the Vet may be trying to help , the Insurance Co may not pay out ..

most insurers dont if the dog already has problems they seem reluctant to insure them rediculous isnt it thats what they are supposed to be there for and i can honestly say i havent had any problems with more than they pay me out very quickly

I have to disagree with you here Chloe :)
I have my Danes insured with the KC simply because they will cover ALL illnesses regardless of whether they could be classed as hereditary or not, so if one of mine start having a problem with their joints they will be covered whereas I know of other insurers that say it's HD and wont pay up :(
At the ned of the day it does come down to personal choice but with our breed a saving at the outset isn't necessarily a good thing, cos it might cost more in the long run.
Grace

Exactly why my Insurance costs £17.95 a month Grace ;)
By Carla
Date 05.04.03 09:24 UTC
Er, I didn't say More Than dont cover hereditary diseases... having double checked this morning - they do. As long as the dog has no symptoms before insuring then you are covered.
Grace - you should know me better than that by now! :)
Its a competitive market out there... and I see nothing wrong with taking advantage, as long as you do your homework.

Fair comment Chloe, so exactly why haven't you told me of this before and saved me some money ;)
Must admit I have had no dealings with More Than at all, so will take your advice on this one, I just meant it's important to check the small print as a lot of these insurance companies get out of paying for things with it. No offence meant, please don't send the hound of the baskervilles after me :D

we were with e&l but the vets we are with told us that they may be quite cheap but that they had problems getting payments from them.we swapped to asda for £9.75 for a mini schnauzer.unfortunatley they are having problems with underwriters at the moment, and hope to have the pet insurance up and running again soon.

thank you all for your input, as you can see I have now registered and taken my insurance with more than at £11.49 special thanks to chloe. ta Greg.

I am with Pet plan for the Dogue de Bordeaux as they were the only one's that would cover her for the full purchase price, continues cover for a life time illness,it is £24 odd a month, I know it is a lot , but have been court out before for cheap insurance, that was not worth the paper it was written on.A Lady I know has a Newfie pup that they have now said may have the onset of hip problems, and has had to have x-rays and is now on an inflamatory-pain killing concoction non of which is covered by the insurance is it is a congenital disease, and anything that is still being treated after 12 month, becomes not covered.

hello, just to let you know you're not alone,my mother in law recently bought a manchester terrier pup when she changed the ownership she didn't see the tiny box you're supposed to tick if you don't want to carry on with the insurance and so the kennel club have been taking £17 odd out of her account every month for the past 3 or 4 months, she is as you probably are not ammused so......you are not alone here,I guess the moral of the story is...make sure you look for all the tiny boxes!!
