My friends black lab (herself from 2 black parents) was mated to a yellow dog and I assumed, wrongly, that as black is dominant the pups would be black. A few yellow pups were born and we thought, ok... the bitch must carry yellow from a grandparent... but they kept coming! ALL 9 yellow! 3 darker and the rest light cream. (sidenote: All pups lived and all have gained weight overnight.)

Is this unsual?

yellow is a recessive gene both parents must carry it for them to produce yellow same with chocolate it doesnt matter wether the parents are both black or chocolate but two yellows mated together will only produce yellow puppies.

My friend mated a yellow with a chocolate and got 8 black puppies!

sneaky little recessive gene lol...

Still a surprise to see the entire litter of yellow. Even if she has proved herself to be black carrying yellow, I expected to see SOME blacks there!

Your friend was taking a risk mating yellow to choclate it is a definate no no in Lab breeding she is very lucky she got blacks as the pigment would have been awful on yellow/choc mating
