has anyone else had a negative response from their vets when asking for their bitches hormone jabs to prevent them coming on heat.my bitch has only had one of these and the vet said he wasnt happy about doing them on a regular basis as their is a risk of pyometra.i don't want to get my bitch spayed as i want to breed from her again in the near future.

I dont believe it is something which should be used except in a case of emergency. it can throw the hormones out. Bitches come into season and that is something we have to live with.

My vet will only administer these in an emergency, certainly not as a matter of routine, to avoid the hassles of a bitch in season. I'm told the incidence of pyo and hormonal problems following these is far too high to be coincidental.
Far better to let your bitch have her seasons as normal.
Hi my step sister lost her little terrier cross to polyometria (i think thats how you spell it!) after a injection to prevent her coming on heat so I would strongly advice against it.
I would have her spade if you dont intend to breed or show if you do I think it is just something you will have to live with seasons are a nusience but thats part of owning a bitch I guess

I haven't known any bad responses to it, I will use it in the future on my bitch.

I would never give these injections are a matter of routine, for my convenience, risking the health of the bitch. Perhaps I am old fashioned but I dont believe in interfering with hormones in a bitch - especially one that I hope to breed in the future. You cant expect to have it both ways - if you own a bitch you should be prepared to put up with the seasons or spay. After all its only a couple of weeks twice a year. I expect some bitches/owners do get away with it, but I wouldn't take the chance, my girls are too precious. Pyometra is one of the true medical emergencies, bitches can die very quickly with a closed pyo, poorly in the morning - fitting/dead by supper time. If you are lucky and get her to a good vet quickly they may save her by spaying on the spot - is it really worth it ?JMO.
Yes I agree westie lover my step sisters bitch was poorley in the morning so she rang the vet he told her to bring the bitch in the following morning she had to call the vet out late that night as the bitch had gone floppy and unresponsive he opperated imediatley but she died under the anasthetic my step sister was deverstated they only had her injected because they were going away and she was due on season and she had to go in the kennels
It was a awfull thing to happen made worse by the fact she could have had the bitch spade she was just a terrier cross family pet! not show or prime breeding stock

Well, I have had 2 bitches injected a week past Monday and I have had them done many moons ago too...besides not working (Munsters seem to have very strong hormones! :() I haven't seen any other side effects and my vet has never given me any sort of lecture about them. If your vet will not provide what you want, change them...after all you are paying towards their wages & practice, if you're not happy then move!

Consider yourself very lucky to not have had any side effects lily munster, with these injections, but it is a well known fact, that they can cause problems, I would not risk giving them to my bitches, knowing others have had sometimes fatal side effects. I say Well done to your vet for being so honest.

But when I put a post on here back in January about mismating injections, I was given a lot of horror stories! I relayed these to my friend who was probably more than a little mortified but she didn't have any option at the time.
Well besides the 9 week wait just to make sure that there were no pups, the bitch is fine, no side effects etc.
Every bitch is an individual, I have never witnessed any side effects with these hormonal injections. & my dogs ..maybe I'm lucky or maybe as was said before, you hear the horror stories but never the cases of when everything has gone to plan!
