- By kao kate [gb] Date 30.03.03 13:27 UTC
Hi everybody can you help we have a new stud dog and he has a bitch here to serve she is on day 13 of her season and standing for him he is not interested if we wind him up he will mount but the end of his equipment so to speak is soft!
He is a eighteen month old dog and this is his first bitch
any advice appreciated like should we only put them ytogether to mate as we usually do with our other dog or should we keep them in together he seems very shy!

Where do you live? If you live in the Stafford area I may be able to advise you of someone who may be able to mate the dogs for you!!

Hi we are near Nottingham ive managed to get them mated twice but he hasnt tied with her! Ive had to put him on her back and wind him up then he does the rest his self so im at a loss to know what to do now ive never experianced this before our old stud just gets on and does it himself and ties every time but he was already a proven stud when we got him!

My dog won't mate a bitch until she's absolutely spot on, it doesn't matter if she's flagging, standing, backing into him...! He's mated bitches from day 7 to day 21, and all have gone on to have healthy litters.

Same here my dogs (now retired) wouldn't mate a bitch until she was spot on no matter how much you coaxed them. One bitch stayed with us a whole week and was 21 days when she mated & she went on to have 8 puppies (all mini schnauzers) to my black & silver dog.
The dog ususlly knows best so maybe the bitch isn't quite right.Have you tried your older stud dog with her (on the lead so no mishaps occur) just to see if he's keen?
Maybe best if the young dog dosen't have an audience watching him either, try leaving them together with one person & see if that helps.
Jenny.

sorry should of made my message a bit clearer we dont still have our older stud he died over a year ago i was just comparing the two
he is the only boy in this household!!
my own bitch is also on heat (we dont want her mating) and he is mad keen on her and mounts her as soon as look at her.
we have managed to get them mated once with a tie of five minutes but i tried again today and he wasnt interested and mated her with out the tie again!!
im having to wind him up so to speak with our bitch them swap the bitches quick and plonk him on her back then he will do the job
Im starting to think he just doesnt fancy her the only thing i have noticed is at play time she is very aggressive to him and frequantly bowls him over and pins him to the floor.
she isnt agressive when he mounts her though

If you've had one tie, even if it was only 5 minutes, that may well be good enough.

I'm guessing they are a small breed? I just can't imagine manhandling a largish reluctant dog with any success! :D

jeangenie...you have obviously never seen a bloodhound mating then!!!!!!

D'you know, Sam, I think you're right!! :D :D

It was the wording about whisking one bitch away and "plonking him on top" of another! How?! :)

Sorry to hear of your older dog.
First thing first get your young dog away from your own bitch as he is obviously paired up with her so to speak & he will hardly have an interest in the bitch you are trying to mate if your own bitch is around.
I had the same problem with my salt & pepper dog he wouldn't mate the bitch he was supposed to because he wanted to mate the bitch he was with in the house, so to solve our problem we sent the bitch to our in-laws for a few days & we waited till the next day to mate the bitch the gentleman fetched round, by then our dog was so sex starved he mated the bitch & done his job full tie for 15mins & again the next day & this bitch was 15days by then she went on to have a lovely litter of 5.
So keep trying don't give up.
good luck
Jenny.
