Last week my Pharaoh Hound, Zara, aged 10 had a weepy right eye and kept
rubbing it. I took her to the vet on friday morning and he put some colour
drops in her eye and said she had a ulcer. Possibly damaged the surface of her eye in a bush/gorse. The vet subsequently operated on her eye and currently the
third eyelid is stitched over so she can't see out that eye. I understand this
treatment helps the eye to repair. Zara will have her stitches out on Monday
April 7th afternoon. She's not to happy having to wear a surgical / elizabethan
collar !!
Has anyone else had a similar incident?
Would be interested to know if things were ok after or recurrent problems.

I have an Afghan that has had eye ulcers for the past two years, none of which can be put down to trauma to the eye. The specialist is mystyfied as to why they occurred but recently I had her tested for thyroid and it came back low. Apparently a low thyroid can produce ulcers for no apparent reason. I was told that some vets do stitch the third eye lid to encourage healing but this was not done in my case. Each time the ulcers healed well but as she had so many in the one eye this weakened the cornea and this ruptured last week resulting in her losing the eye. I hope that in your case it is a one off and that she heals well with no further problems.

Pam,
My Boxer did the same thing as your girl and had the eyelid stitched over, healed fine. Unfortunately he did it again but that healed great too:-)

Hi

I have Cavaliers and have had experience with eye ulcers, usually caused by damage from rose bushes, thorns and CATS. We have also had a bad experience with an eye ulcer related to booster injections. If you do a search for vaccine related problems or Toddys eyes you will find lots of discussions. Toddy is fine now and his eye has little or no scarring. It was not stiched up but treated with lots of eye medication.

Good Luck

I was recently contacted by a pug breeder in Scotland regarding my article in Our Dogs regarding Plasma Transfusions for puppies suffering from Fading Puppy Syndrome.
She went on to tell me that eye ulcers are commen in pugs and infact one of her bitches ended up losing an eye due to an ulcer that would not heal.
However, a friend of hers had a pug with a very bad ulcer which too was not responding to operations and anti-biotics. This ladies vet then started to drop plasma - taken from the affected dog - into the eye. The results were fantastic and the ulcer healed really quickly. I have spoken to the vet that writes for Ourdogs and he too has heard of this treatment. Worth a try - it makes sense really when you think of all the antibodies in plasma.
