I'm trying hard to find breeders of either Malamutes in miniature or the fabled Iceland Dog...

Please if anybody has any useful information, please forward it too laying@homewithpinky.fsnet.co.uk

I would really appreciate any help.

Kind Regards

Julie

No, Malamutes don't come in miniature! Might I suggest that you do a search for "Spitz breeds". There are smaller dogs like the Finnish Spitz or Keeshond, although I must admit to not knowing about the temperament or standards of these breeds. As for the Iceland dog, I think you'd have to import, I can't find any UK based breeders (although others might know). But the Iceland dog doesn't bear much resemblance to a Mal anyway! Can I suggest more research into the various breeds?

Hi
If you want a smaller dog than the mal look for a breed that is supposed to be smaller. The trend of trying to minaturise breeds is one I find very concerning-there are hundreds of breeds out there so you must be able to find something suitable. To make a breed smaller the 'person' must neglect all else in the breed standard in favour of size and so the resulting dogs are not only small but also poor specimens of the breed as well.
As the other poster says there are smaller spitz breeds why not research some of them and see if any fit your requirements.

Have you thought about a husky? They have the look of a malamute but are a lot smaller. Malamutes have a set breed standard so no one breeds small ones and thank God for that. So far the malamute is largely being left as it should be, a large natural looking dog. And long may that reign :)

Are you thinking of the Alaskan Klee Kai???? If you do a search you'll get loads of information. There is an alaskan klee kai club of Great Britain, I'm sure you'll find breeders on their website. :)

Yes, the Alaskan Klee Kai does look quite like a Mal in miniature. There is also the German Spitz which comes in different sizes, Mittel and Klein being the usual ones in the UK, but they tend to look more like small Keeshonds or Samoyeds imho.
What's wrong with having a nice large Malamute though? They are virtually unbreakable, even when stepped on, are enthusiastic gardeners, and are superb garbage disposal experts ;)

Hi Julie,

Having owned a Samoyed and Mal's I think the next spitz breed I would like is a Finnish Lapphund. They are smaller but with similar markings to a Mal but I would certainly find the particular spitz breed you like with a good temperament and I am sure many good breeders would welcome you to visit and learn about the breed.

Good Luck,

Jenny & The Wintersperre Gang.
