Well, I suppose that it happens to most people. Dogs had just had their dinner and went back into the garden. I heard pup barking and knew that she was barking at our lovely, elderly neighbour - so went out to investigate. Yes - pup was barking at her - but from the wrong side of our side-gate :( She had either jumped the gate or the fence. Older dog has never jumped either, but as pup is a bit bigger she has managed it. Hubby won't be please when I tell him that they will both need to go up - prob is do I just do the bit that I think she jumped or the lot. Fortunately, one side of the garden has a dense hawthorn/holly hedge the other side of the fence so she can't/won't jump that. The fence at the bottom is only 3 foot but has brambles and things behind it and then a barbed wire fence before the horses field. Don't think that she will jump that one - or will she one day ? :( :(

Dogs will quite easily jump barbed wire. It's never hurt them so they have no idea that it could! When I have to send my dogs over barbed wire, (and only if there is no where I can get them under it) I take my jacket off and lay it over the wire.

I well remember my old Beth jumping a 4 foot fence, picking a hedgehog off of my neighbour's lawn and carried it into their kitchen! My neighbour came around to tell me and when I went to collect her, his wife was combing the fleas out of her coat and washing them down the sink!

One of my dogs would gladly jump through brambles if the incentive was good enough, and I wouldn't want to take any risks with the barbed wire, also you say your dog is a pup, presumably she is going to get bigger and be able to jump higher?
If you don't want to replace all the fence panels - expensive business - you could perhaps put trellis along the top, at least then you can still see through it and can put climbers on it, my dogs won't go anywhere near the pyracanthra!!!

Thanks for the advice. She won't grow anymore - she's 11 months now - but we still call her pup :) The suggestion of trellis is a good idea as we are loath to increase that part of the fence, as our neighbour is in her 80's and we always chat over the fence to her to make sure that she is OK. I don't think that pup wants to escape - being an Aussie she is quite home orientated - but gets excited when she sees our neighbour near our house :) The neighbour sometimes gives the dogs biscuits over the top of the fence - whole digestives :)

Another job for the weekend. At least with the weather changing she won't be spending much time in the garden until then.

Hi Daisy, Have you tried building a few small jumps, Iknow you said she is only 11mts but just small ones and teach her to jump on command.Ionce had a dog who used to jump out of the garden even as far as 2 or 3 gardens along.When she was old enough we went to agility and she loved it.Once she was taught to jump on command she never jumped out of the garden again. Maybe this will help

She already goes to agility :) Only does the tunnel and a few very small jumps tho'. We have some jumps in the garden for older dog - have a friend who works for the local water company, he gave us some very large traffic type cones. Hubby converted them so that we can rest canes across them - they make very good jumps :)

I have a fence jumper too, only, even a 6 ft fence poses no problems to him, so im saving up to build a brick wall around the front of my house, to be topped with wooden fencing, and a post and wire affair with wooden trellis at the top in the back.

If your dog has a top height, over wich she wont jump, and that height is low enough to not be a pain in the backside for you and your neighbour, then make it solid, but if not, use some trellis.

With Rocky, if he thinks its pretty solid, he will jump it, so i have to make it sturdy enough to withstand them slamming into it occasionally, but flimsy looking so that he wouldnt consider it safe enough to jump! tricky huh!

Good luck with it, its a very very irritating habit once they start it!

It's a difficult problem - I don't want to risk the dog's safety, but our neighbour is very dear to us and we don't want to cut ourselves off from her. She also loves the dogs. Pup hasn't jumped over again yet - so we will try the trellis and hope that that is sufficient to stop her :)
