Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Whippet with sudden swollen eye - help!
- By guest [gb] Date 30.03.03 16:12 UTC
Our eight month old whippet has just come in from the garden with one half-closed, swollen eye & the other looks quite sore - his third eyelid is also very red. Is this like to be an unseen wasp or bee sting, or has he jabbed himself whilst rummaging in the hedge? He doesn't seem to have anything in his eye & doesn't seem to be in any pain (although he seems quite sorry for himself). This is probably a really dumb question - but dogs don't get allergies do they, as this looks just like a severe case of hay fever?!

Any advice or suggestions very gratefully received. Many thanks. Ollie

I would have thought , if it was hayfever , that both eyes would be affected. Bathe the eye in a weak saline solution and take him to the Vet today or tomorrow to check it out. He could of scratched hi retina on something

If you have Piriton in the house give the pup about 3/4 of a tablet, it should do no harm and if the swelling goes down you will know it is a response to something.

As Melody says bathe the eye in a weak saline solution . Our pup had a swollen/closed eye when 4 months old and when we phones the vet this was the advice given . Also make an appointment for the morning if it doesnt get any better overnight . My vet mentioned that puppys are prone to conjunctivitus through playing in muck etc . Just a thought .
We "think" pups was down to scratching his nose and accidently catching his eye
