Topic Dog Boards / General / Microchip Alert!

There's a warning in today's paper that pets chipped with "Pettrac" chips are no longer registered with Petlog. If one of these pets goes missing, you have to phone California in office hours, not the UK 24-hour service. Check on your certificates to see if the name Pettrac appears, or if the number starts with 1 and ends with A, or starts with either 977 or 250.

If it does, contact Petlog at http://www.petlog.org.uk, who should re-register you free as a goodwill gesture.

You could also contact Pettrac http://www.avidplc.com to tell them what you think about not being informed of this (it happened last year, and they decided it was impracticable to tell those affected).

Thank you for bringing this to our attention :-)

I am absolutley furious about this, as we had rufus microchipped only 2 weeks ago
and it is with Pettrac.

Does anyone know the implications of this.

I will contact petlog..and my vet I think.

Which paper was this in Jean?

Thanks, Louise

In the Weekend section (bottom of Page 2) of the Daily Telegraph. I thought it outraageous that this happens and nobody is told anything about it.
- By Louisebarnes [gb] Date 29.03.03 14:00 UTC
Hi thanks for that.

I am just astounded that our dog was chipped so recently too.

Will get on to our vet about this on monday :-(

I am furious. Have just checked my dogs registration forms and my younger one is with Pettrac. I have emailed both the contacts you have given. The Petlog address goes via the K.C. so I have asked them for some clarification and information. I have also been in touch with Avid to again tell them of my disatisfaction and asking for some detailed information. This must affect a great many dogs, and I wouldn't even have known about it. My vet only yesterday checked both my dogs chips prior to their eye test, so I wonder if any of the vets actually know what has happened.
If anyone finds out any other information please keep us informed.

Do you mind if I crosspost this to the Dog Rescue Pages forum? They'd be very interested/disturbed to know this :(
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 29.03.03 18:15 UTC
As far as I'm concerned, please do! As many people as possible should know.
- By KathyM [gb] Date 29.03.03 19:31 UTC
Done it - I cant believe people could be so insensitive to not even tell people their pet isnt registered any more - what would happen in their pet went missing and someone found it and it was scanned by the vet? Grrrrr!
- By Bec [gb] Date 29.03.03 21:26 UTC
I think the reason is that these chips do not comply with EU standard for microchips, although not 100% sure but vaguely remember it being mentioned in my microchip training that non standardised chips were still being used as they were cheaper to buy (not for the pet owner!)
If you have had your dog (or any other animal) done recently then I suggest you go back to your vet and ask for a refund as they have not provided you with the service you were expecting i.e a lifetime registration with Petlog.

Thanks for that note. I am considering soon getting Sydney done. I shall certainly check with the vet for the brand.

My dogs were chipped by Petrac in May 1999 so this must affect a huge number of owners! Am emailing them now!

Hi Hayley,
It's Petlog that can be contacted through the KC (I'm told!) - Pettrac can be contacted through http://www.avidplc.com or their lost-and-found number 0800 652 9977 (which I gather will be answered in California).

Alternatively email PetLog http://www.petlog.org.uk with your details, and the article says they will re-register you free of charge.

Hope this helps :)

Chewi has a Pettrac chip but is registered with Identichip. Does that mean he is still covered?

Best to check up. Make sure that somewhere in the UK, that operates 24/7, knows your details.

There must be a legal liability for not informing people forthwith, also the dogs which are out of the country right now will not get back in.

Claims below £5000 are heard in the small claims court and judgements are based on what is 'reasonable' it is reasonable that they know their product travels with the animal and to market a product it is also reasonable they understand its full use.

If part of its use is to allow the export and import of pet dogs, it is reasonable they have paid 'Due Diligence' to understand fully the consequences of a dog outside the UK with an import licence ( pet passport ) to get back in.

Part of the pet passport re-entry is that the dog must have a chip which confirms its identity, their chip. It would be considered reasonable they gave satisfactory notice as they either understand the consequences of a dog disallowed re-entry or alternativly they have not paid 'Due Dilligence' to the full use of their chip.

It is the vet who is primarily liable as he sold the product, if the KC are recommending them then they too could be cited.

Until I receive some clarification from the KC or Avid can anyone say how we are affected. Does this mean the chip is useless now, or just that it is logged with a different company. Is it possible all these dogs will have to be re-chipped. I certainly would not want another chip inserted into my dog. I am really surprised this has not come up on the KC website or in the doggy press. I wonder what chips were being used at Crufts?
Lorna
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.03.03 15:36 UTC
No, the chip is not useless, it's just that all the details associated with that chip (your dog's name, address, etc) are not held with PetLog anymore, they are only held by Pettrac, who, at the time the article went to press, could only be contacted during Californian office hours (and not at all at weekends).

It states that if affected clients contact PetLog with their details they will be re-registered F.O.C. as a goodwill gesture.

When I moved 2 years ago I called Petlog (who held the identichip numbers) to register the change of address and was told that they had given the database my chip was in to Identichip! I had never been notified of a change or anything regarding details for contacting them. They were very nice about it and gave me the No for Identichip and she was on their files and the change went smoothly, but it seems that Petlog is a bit useless when it actually comes to notifying owners of dogs on their register that things have changed.

I like the way things are at Identichip now. I have all the details I can view online - make changes online (for a fee of course!), but all I have to do is go to their website and sign in.

well now I am in 2 and 8 as my nan says...I registered Jessie with pet log just in case so both dogs registered there, but also jessie still registered with pet trac and poppy resitered also with animal care.. do you think thats enough ??
- By dudleyl [gb] Date 03.04.03 19:25 UTC
Yesterday I had two replies, each from Petlog and Pettrac, both saying there was no effect for me as it was still a freecall out of hours to USA and I should not be worried by 'the article'

Hi Lorna
I checked on the Kennel Club website & there is info there under the Petlog section about the Pettrac chips. That seems to be different to what they have sent you if I am following the thread properly.
