When I take home my puppy he will be 11 weeks old. Should I have him on my lap for the 3 hour car drive (I won't be driving) or will he be too squirmy? I do have a crate. I would prefer to have him on my lap, but if you all think he would be too much to handle for the drive, then I'll crate him.

Hi, if he's small enough to fit on your lap comfortably I would hold him if you prefer to, but have a comfy crate ready in case he is too squirmy or constantly sick. Also if its a hot day he may be more comfy in a covered crate out of the sunshine. Take lots of old towels and a kitchen roll for accidents, wet wipes for you (!) and a bottle of water and a bowl in case he does get hot/you get delayed.

I don't like the idea of having a puppy on a lap in the car (nobody would do it with a baby). If the car stops suddenly it could be propelled forward towards the windscreen. We borrowed a large plastic cat/small dog carrier and put it on the back seat fastened with the seat belt - left the door open and sat next to it so that puppy had company.

I got both my dogs over 300 miles from home at different times. (6 months apart). Both of them sat in my lap coming home. The wife was driving as I was banned at the time for speeding on a bike. Both of them slept for the entire journey. The driver obviously has to be more carefull not to brake to sharply.

I think the puppy will be O.K. on my lap. We'll sit in the back seat of the van (so we'll be far from the front windshield, and the highway is divided, so there'll be no oncoming traffic. I'll bring the crate, just in case.

On my other thread, someone added to bring water (from the breeder) and newspapers to lay on the ground if the puppy has to have a wee.
