Have a year old Irish staff that i wanted to stud, only trouble is one ball hasn't dropped, vets advice is to whip them both out,any one out there with some advice or had similar problem with their dog.Do I really need to remove the one thats dropped?

Hi,
The one that hasn't dropped should be removed, and as this condition can be inherited, you shouldn't use him at stud. Sorry.

what about the one that has dropped, any views if its safe to leave the healthy one and remove the one thats not dropped.

My mother's golden had this problem - he had the retained one removed and kept the other. He's never been used at stud (there was never any intention to). He's now 11 years old, and has never suffered any problems from his one "dangler".

Testicles are outside the body because they need to retain a lower temperature, testicles that are inside the body DO heat up and can very often cause testicular tumours, which if not identified sharpish can kill your dog.
You should not breed from your dog, it is an inherited condition that he would probably pass on. Neutering him is the best option for him.

thanks Dawn,it must be inherited as his dad had the same but his other ball dropped aged around 15 months. you can see the ball beside his penis when he stretches out on his back, and was advised by the breeder that gentle massage would help it to drop, thanks for your advice tho.

hes a 13 months to b exact! had been told the ball thats not dropped if not removed has a high risk of becoming cancerous.I just wondered if its a risk to keep the good one!

Hi Lyzanne.
I have known surgical correction of a testicle in the groin area being bought down into the correct position. But as for breeding NO, he is still a monorchid and will pass it on, irresponsible and unethical, I would tell the owner of his father that too.
Dawn.

Well I think the poster has proof why such a dog shouldn't be used at stud, as the pup has the inherited this from his father. Sadly the pups sisters may be bred from and they may have sons with this problem.

He stated that the father of the pups testy (the retained one) dropped when he was 15 months old. I'm sure that is what I read :)
If so how could he still be placed as being retained if they were both there by the time he was 15months old? They just took a little longer to drop but are not retained. I have heard of dogs taking this long. I personally would wait till maybe ur little man is 2 years old before u do anything just wait and see maybe his will come down too. If not then fix him, but if ur not planning on breeding him then I would fix him. Was there any other males in the litter, how about seeing if u can talk to them and ask them if they have the same problem?
Just my opinion
ttfn:)

Out of a litter or five he was the only survivor, though you say i could wait and see if it does drop I wouldn't want to risk his health. After reading everyones opinion its obviously best I don't stud him, although I would have loved to.I suppose a trip back to the vets is best now to get their opinion now hes a year old, their view was to remove both if the retained one hadn't dropped by the time he was a year.
Anyway, balls or no balls hes still my boy,and i love him!!! Ahhh

That last sentence was the best thing anyone can say, Lyzanne!! We all have the best dogs at home! :)

well, now i've had loads of similar advise i'll just enjoy him and not stud, and get the non-dangler! removed, unless it can be corrected.I was just a bit shocked at the vets when she suggested they remove both, but if it long term will be safer for 'Blue' then thats what I'll do.Thanks for your knowledgable advise yet again.
