Saw Stephanie's message for the terrier and wanted to start a new query.
Are stalking dogs normally pastoral dogs? Our corgi has recently started stalking too [even on lead] and then when we are 2 metres away from the other dog he will run up to him wagging his tail while I say things loudly to the owner like "sorry he is nice but just practising his herding etc". He has never been aggressive and does not do it to all dogs and not in parks, only on the riverbank. Most of the dogs he does this to know him by now but it must be a bit scary for the owner who sees this for the first time. It's like a Mexican standoff sometimes when he comes across a Border Collie as they will both do it to each other for ages.
Have I got it totally wrong and is this a sign of something else or is he just herding?
The only other thing he herds are pigeons and our friends' kids.
regards
cissy

I dunno about this one either! My dog Rocky does it, he stalks stiff legged towards the other dog, very slowly, and then lays down and crawls, is this what you mean? He never ever did it, until a border collie did it to him oneday. Dunno if that has anything to do with it though.
It doesnt seem to precede a scrap, some dogs he likes, some he doesnt, (today he backed off from a growly jrt!), the stalking, when its a dog he turns out not to like, seems to be coincidental.

Anyone know what it means?

Hi - yes this is what I mean; mine also learnt it from a border collie [he picks up things way too quickly!]
Any ideas grateful.

Sydney our Doberman (only 9 weeks) when we are playing fetch stalks his toys then pounces on them. He's definately not a pastoral dog. Though he does loves the grass in pastures.. yum yum
