Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / X-rays and calcified bones

Hi,

I just had my bitch in the vet yesterday at 50 days in her pregnancy to get her x-rayed. The first x-rays we did, we saw nothing, so the vet decided maybe we should do another one, the second sets of x-rays absolutly nothing again. By this time I was very dissapointed because I've had so much bad luck with my females in the past and this was the first time we had results with the ultrasound done back at 30 days. (we saw two at 30 days)

Now she was showing all the signs and the vet said for her own peace of mind to do a ultrasound, sure enough we saw two very lively puppies! She said she must not be as advanced in her pregnancy as we taught and that why we didn't see the pups on the x-ray because the bones were not calcified yet.

So now we're back to step one no knowing how many pups are in there although I believe there just might be two. At this stage is a ultrasound a good tool to count puppies? This is an older maiden bitch ( 5 yrs old ) and this is why I am so worried, we wanted to know how many pups were in there. The vet doesn't want to do a section on her unless she is showing problems, my question is what should I look for when she is in whelp as far as complications?

Thank you,

Justine

Aren't Xrays dangerous to the unborn pups ? I would have thought ultra sound should be used in all cases ??

If u get to many I heard they can be dangerous and I was told to have them done about a week or so before due date as they don't show up as well to do with the bones of the pups. I had one done on Tiva the first time and was told definatley 5 but looked like 6, I seen the x-ray (we counted 6 they were behind each other, but could still make out their spine and heads). She had 6. I learned how to papalate and could tell how many she was having and was right every time so never bothered with x-rays. Less stress on her to.

Good luck with ur soon to be mom wishing u the best :)

I asked my vet after the x-rays were done if they could have an effect on the pups and she said absolutly not, it was a safe precedure.
