Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Can some one help me with my Terrier???

Hi, I'm new here 'n' I was just wonderin' if you could help me with my dog, shes a Terrier cross, n every time I take her in the field for a run (I trust her off lead most times) she seems ok, until she meets a strange dog, then before I say 'no' and put her on the lead, shes charging at the other dog, head low, and hairs stood on end around her shouldiers and down her back as if shes going to attack, but when she gets to them she stops, and waggs her tail... The problem is that she will go for any dog, even Rotties and German shepards, fearless I know, but I'm worried that 1 day the dog she meets wont want to play... I have tried lead, but some times I find it unfair, because our other dog (labrador) is well so behaved that he doesn't need a lead and isnt used to lead because of this.
can some 1 help?

Hi
Your terrier how old is she? Has she been doing this for a long time? Obviously the other dogs are reading her body language and not taking offence but can understand your worries. Have any dogs she has done this to taken umbrage with her & told her off?
What do the owners think or say?
One of mine tends to stalk other dogs instead of just going up to them but hasn't had any problems yet - I think it looks worse to us humans than it actually is.
I usually call out to my dog 'to stop that & say hello properly' for the other dog's owner's benefit.

I would definately not let her off lead anymore. If i saw your dog coming toward my dog i would be frightened. Not for me but for my dog. I dont know she is friendly. Also what if one of the dogs she goes up to is already dog aggressive? The owner might be keeping her dog onleash so that he doesnt meet any other dogs. Get tough and use that leash. You could also try using a small (1ft.) connector and hook her to your lab if he is so good. That way she will try to go and the lab will make her say, and hopefully train her to stay. If that doesnt wook though use the leash for her safty as well as others.
