Baily had her pups yesterday. Today she has some swelling in her back teet, right by vaginal area. It's not red, doesn't seem sore, and she's not running a fever. I'm taking her to vet first thing in the morning. I would appriciate any advice on what I can do. I've been putting warm compresses on it, and trying to keep a pup on it when they nurse. Just adding this, I was massaging and putting compresses on her problem teet, and discovered what seems to be a teet that didn't form completely. It's the size of a pimple, and has milk. Any advice would be appriciated VERY much. Thanks

Hi, I would milk out the teat, keep a check on her temp and ask the vets advice. I find it easier to do this with the bitch standing up. It can be quite hard to get the milk going and you may have to use your hold hand around the breast to get it flowing, rather than pulling gently on the teat. It sounds to me more like that there is a build up of milk that the pups cant take as the breast is hard and they cant latch on. The back pair of teats are often small and with an engorged breast, hard for new borns to latch on to. Once you have got as much milk out as possible put the strongest sucking puppy on it, and when that pup is full try and get another one on it if there is any milk left. I suspect the teat just needs to be "got working" and then all will be well. Congratulataions - how many did she have?

Thanks so much :) After leaving my message last night I did that, and she's better this morning. I called the vets, they said watch it for now, should be ok. Sure gave me a scare, she's done so good thruogh her whole pregnancy. She had three, thier doing great. No wieght loss :) and cute as can be. Thanks again!

Congratulations
most bitches have lumpy back teats after whelping when the milk comes in but do get it checked by the vet mastitis is terrible if it takes hold.
I think westie lover covered most points here so If you follow her advice you wont go far wrong
